How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your specific dose.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection under the skin once a week. Your doctor or nurse will guide you on how to do it.

Important

This medicine should only be used once a week. Do not take it more often.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Mouth mucosal inflammation, indigestion, nausea, loss of appetite, stomach pain.
  • Abnormal liver function tests.
  • Mouth ulcers, diarrhea.
  • Rash, red skin, itching.
  • Headache, tiredness, drowsiness.
  • Reduced production of blood cells (red and/or white blood cells and/or platelets).
RARE
  • Sore throat.
  • Bowel inflammation, vomiting, pancreas inflammation, black or tarry stools, stomach/gut ulcers and bleeding.
  • Sunburn-like reactions (increased skin sensitivity to sun), hair loss, increased rheumatic nodules, skin ulcers, shingles, blood vessel inflammation, herpes-like rash, hives.
  • Onset of diabetes.
  • Dizziness, confusion, depression.
  • Decreased albumin levels in blood.
  • Decreased levels of all blood cells and platelets.
  • Bladder or vaginal inflammation, bladder or vaginal ulcers, reduced kidney function, abnormal urination.
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, reduced bone density.
  • Gum inflammation.
  • Increased skin pigmentation, acne, blue spots on skin from bleeding (bruises, small red spots), allergic blood vessel inflammation.
  • Decreased antibody levels in blood.
  • Infection (including reactivation of inactive chronic infection), eye inflammation (conjunctivitis).
  • Mood swings.
  • Vision problems.
  • Inflammation of the heart sac, fluid buildup around the heart, heart compression due to fluid.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Lung scarring (pulmonary fibrosis), shortness of breath, lung asthma, fluid buildup around the lungs.
  • Stress fracture.
  • Electrolyte imbalances.
  • Fever, poor wound healing.
  • Acute toxic colon enlargement.
  • Increased nail pigmentation, acute nail bed inflammation, deep hair follicle infection (boils), visible enlargement of small blood vessels.
  • Pain, weakness or numbness/tingling, reduced response to stimulation, taste changes (metallic taste), convulsions, paralysis, meningism.
  • Impaired vision, non-inflammatory eye disease (retinopathy).
  • Reduced sex drive, impotence, male breast enlargement, abnormal semen production (low sperm count), menstrual cycle disorders, vaginal bleeding.
  • Enlarged lymph nodes (lymphoma).
  • Lymphoproliferative diseases (overgrowth of white blood cells).
  • Increased number of certain white blood cells.
  • Nosebleeds.
  • Protein in urine.
  • Feeling of weakness (asthenia).
  • Jaw bone damage (due to overgrowth of white blood cells).
  • Tissue damage at injection site.
  • Skin redness and peeling.
  • Swelling.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to methotrexate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver, kidney, or blood problems.
  • Avoid drinking a lot of alcohol while using this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a serious infection, tuberculosis, HIV, or other immune system issues, as this medicine might activate dormant infections.
  • Do not use if you have mouth sores, stomach ulcers, or bowel ulcers.

  • Do not use if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as this medicine can cause birth defects or miscarriage.
  • Do not receive live vaccines while on Metoject PEN treatment.
  • This medicine can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Avoid strong sunlight and tanning beds.
  • Tell your doctor if you are elderly, feel generally unwell, or are weak.
  • Inform your doctor if you are dehydrated or have diabetes and use insulin.
  • Men should avoid fathering a child during and for at least 3 months after treatment with this medicine.
  • This medicine may cause tiredness or dizziness. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel this way.
  • If you cough up blood or spit blood, contact your doctor immediately, as this may be a sign of lung bleeding.
  • Swollen lymph nodes (lymphoma) may occur, in which case treatment must be stopped.
  • Diarrhea can be a side effect; if it occurs, stop treatment and tell your doctor.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you notice new or worsening nerve symptoms like muscle weakness, vision changes, confusion, or memory problems, as these could be signs of a rare but serious brain infection.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. For the treatment of conditions other than cancer only once weekly. Organtoxic such as kidneys, liver and bone marrow. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Avoid use in severe renal impairment. Consider the numerous potential interactions. Remember blood tests to monitor safety. (updated 6.11.2023)
