How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your specific dose.

Method

Metoject PEN is given as an injection under the skin only once a week. Your doctor or nurse will guide you on how to give the injection.

Important

This medicine should only be taken once a week. Taking too much Metoject PEN (methotrexate) can be fatal.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Mouth sores or inflammation in the mouth.
  • Digestive problems, nausea, loss of appetite, stomach pain, diarrhea.
  • Abnormal liver function test results.
  • Rash, skin redness, itching.
  • Headache, tiredness, drowsiness.
  • Reduced production of white or red blood cells and platelets.
RARE
  • Sore throat.
  • Gut inflammation, vomiting, pancreatitis, black or tarry stools, stomach/bowel ulcers and bleeding.
  • Sunburn-like reactions, hair loss.
  • Dizziness, confusion, depression.
  • Bladder or vaginal inflammation/ulcers, reduced kidney function, abnormal urination.
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, reduced bone density.
  • Gum inflammation.
  • Increased skin pigmentation, acne, small blue spots on skin (bruising), allergic blood vessel inflammation.
  • Mood swings.
  • Vision problems.
  • Low blood pressure.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to methotrexate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Methotrexate can harm an unborn baby.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver, kidney, or blood diseases.
  • Avoid drinking large amounts of alcohol while using this medicine.
  • Do not get live vaccines while taking Metoject PEN.

  • Your skin may become more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid strong sun and sunbeds; use high SPF sunscreen.
  • Do not inject into skin that is red, tender, hard, bruised, scarred, or has stretch marks.
  • Tell your doctor if you have signs of infection like fever, chills, or a sore throat.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. For the treatment of conditions other than cancer only once weekly. Organtoxic such as kidneys, liver and bone marrow. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Avoid use in severe renal impairment. Consider the numerous potential interactions. Remember blood tests to monitor safety. (updated 6.11.2023)
