How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on your condition and its severity, usually 47.5 micrograms to 190 micrograms once daily for adults.

Method

Take the tablets once a day with water, with or without food. You can divide the tablet, but do not chew or crush it.

Important

The highest generally recommended daily dose is 190 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Tiredness
  • Dizziness, headache
  • Slow heart rate
  • Palpitations (fast or irregular heartbeat sensation)
  • Drop in blood pressure, especially when standing up, sometimes causing fainting
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Shortness of breath during exercise, especially if you have asthma
  • Nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation
RARE
  • Weight gain
  • Depression, drowsiness, sleep problems, nightmares, poor concentration
  • Tingling, prickling, or numbness in the skin
  • Temporary worsening of heart failure symptoms (e.g., swollen ankles), chest pain, weak heart pumping
  • Narrowing of airways (bronchospasm)
  • Skin rash (like hives), increased sweating
  • Muscle cramps
  • Vomiting
  • Worsening of diabetes without clear symptoms
  • Nervousness, anxiety
  • Vision problems, dry or irritated eyes, conjunctivitis
  • Nasal congestion
  • Dry mouth
  • Hair loss
  • Impotence and sexual desire problems, Peyronie's disease
  • Low platelet or white blood cell count
  • Forgetfulness, memory problems, confusion, hallucinations, mood changes
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus), hearing problems
  • Taste disorders
  • Liver inflammation
  • Photosensitivity (rash after sun exposure), worsening or new psoriasis
  • Joint pain, muscle weakness
  • Abnormal levels of certain fats (like cholesterol or triglycerides) in the blood
  • Worsening symptoms of intermittent claudication or Raynaud's syndrome

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to metoprolol or other beta-blockers.
  • Do not use if you have severe asthma or serious breathing problems.
  • Do not use if you have uncontrolled severe heart failure, a slow heart rate (below 50 beats per minute), or very low blood pressure (below 90 mmHg).
  • Do not stop taking Metohexal suddenly; always talk to your doctor first.
  • If you have diabetes, Metohexal can hide symptoms of low blood sugar, so monitor your blood sugar closely.

  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, as Metohexal can interact with them.
  • If you are going to have surgery, tell the anaesthesiologist that you are taking this medicine.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking Metohexal, as it can increase the medicine's drowsy effect.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Significant adverse effects include bradycardia and orthostatic hypotension. Consider potential interactions especially with with drugs affecting the conduction system of the heart. (updated 20.1.2025)
