How to Use

Dosage

The typical dose is 47.5-190 mg metoprolol succinate once daily; for heart failure, the starting dose is lower, usually 11.88 mg or 23.75 mg once daily.

Method

Take the tablets once daily with water, with or without food. You can split the tablet, but do not chew or crush it.

Important

The maximum recommended dose is 190 mg metoprolol succinate once daily, or the highest dose you can tolerate.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness, headache
  • Slow heart rate (bradycardia)
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation
RARE
  • Depression, drowsiness, sleep problems, nightmares
  • Skin rashes, increased sweating
  • Bronchospasm (tightening of airways)
  • Vision problems, dry or irritated eyes
  • Hair loss, impotence and other sexual dysfunctions
  • Forgetfulness or memory issues, confusion, hallucinations

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to metoprolol succinate or other beta-blockers.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, as it can worsen heart problems. The dose must be reduced gradually as advised by your doctor.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have severe asthma, a slow heart rate (below 50 beats per minute at rest), or very low blood pressure.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can increase its sedative and tiring effects.
  • Be careful when driving or operating machinery, as this medicine can cause dizziness or fatigue.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Significant adverse effects include bradycardia and orthostatic hypotension. Consider potential interactions especially with with drugs affecting the conduction system of the heart. (updated 20.1.2025)
