How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take; common adult doses range from 47.5 mg to 190 mg once a day.

Method

Take one tablet once a day with or without food. You can swallow the tablet whole or divided, but do not chew or crush it. Take with at least half a glass of water.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 190 mg, as prescribed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Tiredness
  • Dizziness, headache
  • Slow heart rate
  • Palpitations (feeling your heart beat fast or strong)
  • Drop in blood pressure when standing up (can make you feel dizzy or faint)
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Shortness of breath during exercise (especially if you have asthma)
  • Stomach problems like nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, or constipation
RARE
  • Weight gain
  • Feeling sad (depression), sleep problems, nightmares, trouble focusing
  • Tingling or numbness in your skin
  • Temporary worsening of heart failure (e.g., swollen ankles or feet), chest pain
  • Trouble breathing due to narrowing airways (bronchospasm)
  • Skin rash, increased sweating
  • Muscle cramps, vomiting
  • Feeling nervous or anxious
  • Vision problems, dry or irritated eyes
  • Stuffy nose, dry mouth
  • Hair loss
  • Memory problems, feeling confused, seeing or hearing things that aren't there (hallucinations), mood changes
  • Ringing in your ears (tinnitus), hearing loss
  • Joint pain, muscle weakness
  • Worsening of poor circulation in fingers and toes (Raynaud's phenomenon)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to Metohexal or other beta-blockers.
  • Do not take if you have severe asthma or very bad breathing problems.
  • Do not take if you have severe heart problems, such as a very slow heart rate, severe irregular heartbeat, or untreated heart failure.
  • Do not take if you have very low blood pressure.
  • Never stop taking Metohexal suddenly without talking to your doctor, as this can be dangerous for your heart.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Significant adverse effects include bradycardia and orthostatic hypotension. Consider potential interactions especially with with drugs affecting the conduction system of the heart. (updated 20.1.2025)
