How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 10 mg, up to 3 times a day.

Method

Take the tablet by mouth as instructed by your doctor. You can split the tablet if needed. Always wait at least 6 hours between doses, even if you vomit, to avoid taking too much.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 30 mg or 0.5 mg per kg of body weight.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Drowsiness
  • Feeling down or sad
  • Jerky, shaking, twisting, or stiff muscle movements that you cannot control
  • Stiffness or tremors, similar to Parkinson's disease
  • Feeling restless or unable to sit still
  • A sudden drop in blood pressure, especially if the medicine is given by injection
  • Loose stools
  • Feeling weak
RARE
  • Higher levels of a hormone called prolactin, which can cause milk production in men and women not breastfeeding
  • Menstrual periods that are not regular
  • Seeing or hearing things that are not real
  • Problems with vision or uncontrollable eye movements
  • Feeling less aware or alert
  • Slow heartbeat, especially if the medicine is given by injection
  • Allergic reaction (like rash or itching)
  • Skin rash
  • Feeling confused
  • Fits or seizures, especially in people with epilepsy
  • High blood pressure
  • Itchy, red welts on the skin

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to metoclopramide or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have bleeding, a blockage, or a tear in your stomach or intestines.
  • Do not take if you have a rare tumor near your kidney called pheochromocytoma.
  • Do not take if you have ever had uncontrollable muscle spasms from other medicines.
  • Do not take if you have epilepsy.

  • Do not take if you have Parkinson's disease.
  • Do not take if you are taking levodopa or similar medicines for Parkinson's disease.
  • Do not take if you have ever had unusual blood pigment levels (methemoglobinemia) or a lack of NADH-cytochrome b5.
  • Do not give this medicine to children younger than 1 year old.
  • Do not use this medicine for more than 3 months to avoid the risk of long-term uncontrollable muscle movements.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had an irregular heartbeat or other heart problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have problems with potassium, sodium, or magnesium levels in your blood.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines that affect your heartbeat.
  • Tell your doctor if you have any brain or nervous system problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, as your dose might need to be adjusted.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can make you more sleepy.
  • This medicine can make you sleepy, dizzy, or cause strange movements, which can affect your vision and ability to drive or use machines.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Consider potential interactions especially with antipsychotics and dopamine agonists such as levodopa. Significant adverse effects include extrapyramidal symptoms and confusion. (updated 20.5.2024)
