How to Use

Dosage

For adults, typically 10 mg up to 3 times a day. For children (1-18 years), 0.1-0.15 mg per kg body weight, up to 3 times a day.

Method

This medicine is given as a slow injection into a vein (at least 3 minutes) or into a muscle.

Important

Do not take more than 30 mg or 0.5 mg per kg body weight in a single day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Drowsiness
  • Depression
  • Uncontrollable movements (like tics, tremors, twisting motions, or stiff muscles)
  • Symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease (stiffness, shaking)
  • Restlessness
  • Low blood pressure (especially with injection)
  • Diarrhea
  • Weakness
RARE
  • Increased levels of a hormone called prolactin, which can cause milk production in men and non-nursing women.
  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Hallucinations
  • Reduced awareness or consciousness
  • Slow heart rate (especially with injection)
  • Hypersensitivity (allergic reaction)
  • Vision problems and involuntary eye movements.
  • Confusion
  • Seizures (especially in people with epilepsy)
  • Abnormal blood pigment levels, which may change skin color.
  • Abnormal breast growth (gynecomastia).
  • Uncontrollable muscle spasms after long-term use, especially in older patients.
  • High fever, high blood pressure, seizures, sweating, increased salivation (symptoms of neuroleptic malignant syndrome).
  • Changes in heart rhythm, seen on an ECG.
  • Cardiac arrest (especially with injection).
  • Circulatory shock (severe drop in blood pressure, especially with injection).
  • Fainting (especially with injection).
  • Severe allergic reaction (especially with injection).
  • Very high blood pressure.
  • Suicidal thoughts.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to metoclopramide or any other ingredients.
  • Do not use if you have bleeding, a blockage, or a tear in your stomach or intestines.
  • Do not use if you have a rare adrenal gland tumor called pheochromocytoma.
  • Do not use if you have ever had uncontrollable muscle spasms (tardive dyskinesia) from other medicines.
  • Do not use if you have epilepsy or Parkinson's disease.

  • Do not use if you are taking levodopa or other dopamine agonist medicines.
  • Do not give this medicine to children under 1 year old.
  • Stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor right away if you get uncontrollable movements, high fever, high blood pressure, seizures, sweating, or swelling of the face/lips/throat with breathing problems.
