How to Use

Dosage

A recommended single dose for adults is 10 mg, up to 3 times a day.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give you this medicine as a slow injection into a vein (over at least 3 minutes) or into a muscle.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 30 mg or 0.5 mg per kg of body weight.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Drowsiness
  • Depression
  • Involuntary, jerky, or twisting movements, or stiff muscles
  • Parkinson's-like symptoms (stiffness, shaking)
  • Restlessness
  • Drop in blood pressure (especially when given as an injection into a vein)
  • Diarrhea
  • Feeling weak
RARE
  • Higher levels of a hormone called prolactin in your blood, which can cause milk production in men and in women who are not breastfeeding.
  • Irregular periods
  • Hallucinations
  • Decreased level of consciousness
  • Slow heartbeat (especially when given as an injection into a vein)
  • Vision problems and involuntary eye movements
  • Hypersensitivity (allergies)
  • Confusion
  • Seizures (especially in people with epilepsy)
  • Severe allergic reaction, which may include rash, itching, swelling of the face or throat, breathing difficulties, heart palpitations, or fainting. Seek immediate medical help.
  • Abnormal blood pigment levels, which may change your skin color.
  • Enlarged breasts in men (gynecomastia)
  • Involuntary muscle spasms after long-term use, especially in older patients.
  • High fever, high blood pressure, seizures, sweating, increased saliva. These can be signs of a serious condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome.
  • Changes in heart rhythm (visible on an ECG).
  • Cardiac arrest (especially when given as an injection).
  • Shock (severe drop in blood pressure) (especially when given as an injection).
  • Very high blood pressure in patients with or without pheochromocytoma.
  • Suicidal thoughts.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to metoclopramide or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have bleeding, a blockage, or a hole in your stomach or intestines.
  • Do not use if you have a rare tumor near your kidney (pheochromocytoma).
  • Do not use if you have ever had involuntary muscle spasms due to medication.
  • Do not use if you have epilepsy.

  • Do not use if you have Parkinson's disease.
  • Do not use if you are taking levodopa or other medicines for Parkinson's disease.
  • Do not use if you have ever had abnormal blood pigment levels (methemoglobinemia) or a lack of NADH cytochrome b5.
  • Do not give this medicine to children under 1 year old.
  • Treatment should not last longer than 3 months due to the risk of involuntary muscle spasms.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can increase its sedative effects.
  • This medicine can make you feel sleepy or dizzy, so be careful when driving or operating machinery. It may also cause unusual muscle movements.
