How to Use

Dosage

Adults usually take 10 mg, up to 3 times a day.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water.

Important

Do not take more than 30 mg or 0.5 mg per kg of body weight in one day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling sleepy or tired.
  • Feeling sad or depressed.
  • Uncontrolled twitching, shaking, or stiff movements.
  • Feeling restless or unable to sit still.
  • Loose stools or diarrhea.
  • Feeling weak.
  • Low blood pressure, especially when given into a vein.
RARE
  • Higher levels of a hormone called prolactin, which can cause milk production in men and women who are not breastfeeding.
  • Irregular menstrual periods.
  • Seeing or hearing things that are not real.
  • Feeling less aware or confused.
  • A slow heartbeat.
  • Allergic reactions.
  • Problems with vision or uncontrolled eye movements.
  • Feeling confused.
  • Seizures or fits, especially in people with epilepsy.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to metoclopramide or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have bleeding, a blockage, or a tear in your stomach or intestines.
  • Do not use if you have a rare tumor near your kidney called pheochromocytoma.
  • Do not use if you have ever had uncontrollable muscle movements from other medicines.
  • Do not use if you have epilepsy (a seizure disorder).

  • Do not give this medicine to children younger than 1 year old.
  • Always wait at least 6 hours between doses, even if you throw up a dose.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can make you more sleepy.
  • This medicine can make you dizzy, sleepy, or cause uncontrolled movements, which can affect your ability to drive or use machines.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Consider potential interactions especially with antipsychotics and dopamine agonists such as levodopa. Significant adverse effects include extrapyramidal symptoms and confusion. (updated 20.5.2024)
