Methylphenidate Viatris is used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children aged 6 and older, and in adults.

How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will usually start with a low dose and may increase it by 18 mg daily, no more than once a week, to find the lowest dose that works for you.

Method

Take one tablet once a day in the morning with a glass of water. Swallow the tablet whole; do not chew, break, or crush it. It can be taken with or without food.

Important

For children (6+ years), the maximum daily dose is 54 mg. For adults, the maximum daily dose is 72 mg.

  • Mood swings or changes in personality
  • Headache
  • Nervousness
  • Sleeplessness
  • Joint pain
  • Blurred vision
  • Tension headache
  • Dry mouth, thirst
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Fever
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Unusual hair loss or hair thinning
  • Muscle tension, muscle cramps
  • Loss or decreased appetite
  • Inability to achieve or maintain an erection
  • Itching, rash, or raised red itchy rash (hives)
  • Unusual drowsiness or sleepiness, feeling tired
  • Teeth grinding (bruxism)
  • Panic attacks
  • Tingling, prickling, or numbness of the skin
  • Increased ALT (liver enzyme) levels in blood
  • Cough, sore throat or nasal/throat irritation, upper respiratory infection, sinus inflammation
  • High blood pressure, fast heart rate (tachycardia)
  • Dizziness (vertigo), feeling weak, uncontrolled movements, hyperactivity
  • Aggression, agitation, nervousness, depression, irritability, tension, and abnormal behavior
  • Digestive upset or abdominal discomfort, stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, feeling uncomfortable in the stomach, and vomiting
  • Excessive sweating
  • Weight loss
RARE
  • Suicidal thoughts or feelings
  • Seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not there (signs of psychosis)
  • Uncontrolled speech or body movements (Tourette's syndrome)
  • Allergic reaction symptoms, such as rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other body parts, shortness of breath, wheezing, or difficulty breathing
  • Unusual excitement, overactivity, and uninhibited behavior (mania)
  • Heart attack
  • Sudden death
  • Attempted suicide
  • Convulsions (epileptic fits, seizures, epilepsy)
  • Peeling skin or red/purple patches on the skin
  • Inflammation or narrowing of brain arteries
  • Temporary paralysis or problems with movement, vision, speech difficulties (may indicate blood vessel problems in the brain)
  • Uncontrolled muscle spasms affecting eyes, head, neck, body, and nervous system, caused by temporary lack of blood supply to the brain
  • Reduced number of blood cells (red, white, platelets), which can increase infection risk and bruising/bleeding
  • Sudden high body temperature, very high blood pressure, and severe convulsions (neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
  • Dry eyes
  • Constipation
  • Chest discomfort
  • Blood in urine
  • Apathy
  • Tremors or shaking
  • Increased urge to urinate
  • Muscle pain, muscle twitching
  • Shortness of breath or chest pain
  • Feeling hot
  • Elevated liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests)
  • Anger, restlessness or weepiness, talking too much, excessive awareness of surroundings, difficulty sleeping
  • Problems with sex drive
  • Disorientation or confusion
  • Vision problems or double vision
  • Breast swelling in men
  • Skin redness, red bumpy rash
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms, like unwanted thoughts or repeated actions
  • Muscle cramps
  • Small red spots on the skin
  • Abnormal liver function, including liver failure and coma
  • Changes in test results, including liver and blood tests
  • Abnormal thoughts, lack of feelings
  • Numbness, tingling, and color changes (from white to blue, then red) in cold fingers and toes (Raynaud's phenomenon)
  • Migraine
  • Dilated pupils
  • Very high fever
  • Slow, fast or extra heartbeats
  • Severe epileptic seizure (grand mal seizure)
  • Delusions
  • Severe abdominal pain, often with nausea and vomiting
  • Cerebral blood vessel problems (stroke, cerebral arteritis or cerebral occlusion)
  • Inability to control urination (incontinence)
  • Jaw muscle spasm, making it difficult to open mouth (trismus)
  • Stuttering
  • Nosebleed
  • Increased eye pressure
  • Eye diseases that can cause vision loss due to optic nerve damage (glaucoma)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you or your child are allergic to methylphenidate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you or your child have a thyroid gland disorder, glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye), or a tumor on your adrenal gland.
  • Do not use if you or your child have an eating disorder (e.g., anorexia nervosa) or do not feel hungry/want to eat.
  • Do not use if you or your child have very high blood pressure, narrowing of blood vessels (causing pain in arms/legs), or have ever had heart problems (e.g., heart attack, irregular heartbeat, heart failure, congenital heart defect).
  • Do not use if you or your child have had disorders related to brain blood vessels (e.g., stroke, aneurysm, narrowed/blocked blood vessels, vasculitis).

  • Do not use if you or your child are currently taking, or have taken within the last 14 days, certain antidepressants called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
  • Do not use if you or your child have mental health disorders, such as psychopathic or borderline personality disorder, abnormal thoughts or visions, schizophrenia, or severe mood disorder symptoms like suicidal thoughts, severe depression, or mania.
  • Contact your doctor if you or your child experience blurred vision or other vision problems. Your doctor may consider stopping Methylphenidate Viatris treatment.
  • Boys and young men may experience unexpected and prolonged erections during treatment. Contact a doctor if an erection lasts more than 2 hours, especially if it is painful.
