How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor usually starts with a low dose and may increase it by 18 mg at most once a week, aiming for the lowest dose that works for you.

Method

Take the medicine once a day in the morning with a glass of water. Swallow the tablet whole; do not chew, divide, or crush it. You can take it with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 54 mg for children and 72 mg for adults.

  • Loss of appetite or decreased appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Dry mouth or thirst
  • High blood pressure or fast heart rate
  • Irregular heartbeat (palpitations)
  • Mood changes, mood swings, or personality changes
  • Feeling aggressive, agitated, anxious, or irritable
  • Difficulty falling asleep or unusual drowsiness/sleepiness
  • Dizziness or feeling weak
  • Blurred vision
  • Itching, rash, or hives
  • Joint pain, muscle stiffness, or muscle cramps
RARE
  • Suicidal thoughts or feelings
  • Seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not real (signs of psychosis)
  • Uncontrolled speech or body movements (Tourette's syndrome)
  • Allergic reaction symptoms (e.g., swelling of face, lips, tongue, shortness of breath, wheezing)
  • Unusual excitement, overactivity, and uninhibited behavior (mania)
  • Heart attack or sudden death
  • Seizures (epileptic fits, convulsions, epilepsy)
  • Peeling skin or reddish-purple patches on skin
  • Brain blood vessel inflammation or blockage (e.g., stroke, aneurysm)
  • Temporary paralysis or problems with movement and vision, speech difficulties
  • Uncontrolled muscle spasms (tics) affecting eyes, head, neck, body, and nerves
  • Decreased number of blood cells (red, white, platelets), leading to increased infection risk or easy bleeding/bruising
  • Sudden increase in body temperature, very high blood pressure, and severe convulsions
  • Migraine
  • Dilated pupils or elevated eye pressure
  • Very high fever or slow/fast/extra heartbeats
  • Believing things that are not true (delusions)
  • Inability to control urination (incontinence)
  • Jaw muscle spasm making it hard to open mouth (trismus)
  • Stuttering or nosebleed
  • Eye diseases causing vision loss due to optic nerve damage (glaucoma)
  • Dry eyes or constipation
  • Chest discomfort or apathy
  • Blood in urine or increased need to urinate
  • Tremor or feeling hot
  • Elevated liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests)
  • Anger, restlessness, tearfulness, excessive talkativeness, heightened awareness of surroundings, or difficulty sleeping
  • Sex drive problems
  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Vision problems or double vision
  • Breast swelling in men
  • Skin redness, red bumpy rash
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms
  • Muscle cramps or small red spots on the skin
  • Abnormal liver function, including liver failure and coma
  • Changes in lab test results, including blood and liver tests
  • Abnormal thoughts or lack of feelings
  • Numbness, tingling, and color changes (white to blue then red) in fingers and toes when cold (Raynaud's phenomenon)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to methylphenidate or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Avoid use if you have severe heart problems, very high blood pressure, or serious blood vessel diseases.
  • Do not use if you have taken certain antidepressants called MAO inhibitors within the last 14 days, as this can cause a sudden and dangerous rise in blood pressure.
  • Avoid if you have severe mental health problems, such as psychosis, schizophrenia, severe mood disorder, or suicidal thoughts.
  • Boys and young men may experience prolonged, painful erections. Contact a doctor immediately if an erection lasts more than 2 hours, especially if it is painful.
