How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will start with a small dose and slowly increase it as needed.

Method

Take this medicine once a day in the morning with a glass of water. Swallow the tablet whole; do not chew, break, or crush it. You can take it with or without food.

Important

The highest daily dose is 54 mg.

Possible Side Effects

  • Loss of appetite or less sexual interest
  • Hair loss or thinning hair

  • Trouble getting or keeping an erection
  • Itchy rash, hives, or skin redness
  • Feeling unusually sleepy, drowsy, or tired
  • Teeth grinding
  • Panic attacks
  • Tingling, prickling, or numbness of the skin
  • Higher levels of liver enzymes in blood tests
  • Cough, sore throat, nose irritation, colds, or sinus infections
  • High blood pressure or fast heartbeat
  • Dizziness, feeling weak, uncontrolled movements, or being overly active
  • Feeling aggressive, agitated, anxious, sad, irritable, tense, nervous, or behaving unusually
  • Stomach problems like pain, diarrhea, nausea, upset stomach, or vomiting
  • Sweating a lot
  • Pounding or irregular heartbeat
  • Mood swings or personality changes
RARE
  • Thoughts of hurting yourself or suicide
  • Seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not real (signs of psychosis)
  • Uncontrolled talking or body movements (Tourette's syndrome)
  • Allergic reactions like rash, itching, swelling of face/lips/tongue, trouble breathing or wheezing
  • Feeling unusually excited, overly active, or uninhibited (mania)
  • Heart attack or sudden death
  • Attempted suicide
  • Seizures (epilepsy attacks)
  • Flaking skin, red or blue patches on the skin
  • Brain blood vessel problems like inflammation or blockages
  • Temporary paralysis, problems with movement, vision, or speech (may indicate brain blood vessel issues)
  • Uncontrolled muscle jerks in eyes, head, neck, or body
  • Low blood cell counts (red, white, platelets), leading to more infections, bleeding, or bruising
  • Sudden high body temperature, very high blood pressure, and severe seizures (malignant neuroleptic syndrome)
  • Repeated unwanted thoughts or delusions (believing things that aren't true)
  • Unexplained fainting, chest pain, or trouble breathing (may indicate heart problems)
  • Long-lasting or painful erections
  • Dry eyes
  • Constipation
  • Blood in urine
  • Feeling sluggish or needing to pee more often
  • Feeling hot or changes in liver values (seen in blood tests)
  • Feeling confused or disoriented, double vision or other eye problems
  • Swelling of breasts in men, red bumpy skin rash, or small red spots on the skin
  • Abnormal liver function, including severe liver failure or coma
  • Numbness or tingling in fingers/toes with color changes (Raynaud's phenomenon)
  • Migraine or very high fever
  • Slow, fast, or extra heartbeats, or severe epilepsy attacks (grand mal seizures)
  • Severe abdominal pain, often with sickness and vomiting, or not being able to control peeing (incontinence)
  • Jaw muscle spasms making it hard to open your mouth, or nosebleeds

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you or your child are allergic to methylphenidate or any other ingredient in the medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your child have serious heart problems, very high blood pressure, or problems with blood vessels in the brain (like a stroke).
  • Do not take this medicine if you or your child are currently taking or have taken certain depression medicines called MAO inhibitors in the last 14 days.
  • Talk to your doctor if you or your child have severe mental health problems, such as psychosis, schizophrenia, severe depression, or thoughts of hurting yourself.
  • Inform your doctor if you or your child have thyroid problems, high eye pressure (glaucoma), an adrenal gland tumor, or an eating disorder.

  • Tell your doctor if you or your child have liver or kidney problems, trouble swallowing tablets, a history of seizures (epilepsy), or have abused alcohol or drugs.
  • Contact a doctor right away if you or your child have a painful erection that lasts more than 2 hours.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can make side effects worse.
  • Be careful when driving or using machines, as this medicine can cause dizziness or blurred vision.
