How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will start with a low dose and slowly increase it as needed.

Method

Take one tablet whole with a glass of water in the morning, with or without food. Do not chew, divide, or crush the tablet.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 54 mg.

  • Loss or decrease in appetite
  • Inability to get or keep an erection
  • Itching, rash, or red, raised itchy rash (hives)
  • Unusual sleepiness, drowsiness, feeling tired
  • Panic attacks
  • Tingling, prickling, or numbness of the skin
  • Increased levels of liver enzymes in the blood (seen in blood tests)
  • Cough, sore throat or nose, throat irritation; upper respiratory infection, sinus infection
  • High blood pressure, fast heartbeat (tachycardia)
  • Dizziness (vertigo), feeling weak, uncontrolled movements, hyperactivity
  • Aggression, agitation, anxiety, depression, irritability, tension, nervousness, and abnormal behavior
  • Digestive problems or stomach upset, stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, discomfort in the stomach, and vomiting
  • Excessive sweating
RARE
  • Thoughts or feelings of suicide
  • Seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not real (signs of psychosis)
  • Uncontrolled speech or body movements (Tourette's syndrome)
  • Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other body parts, shortness of breath, wheezing, or difficulty breathing
  • Feeling unusually excited, overactive, or uninhibited (mania)
  • Heart attack
  • Sudden death
  • Attempted suicide
  • Seizures (epileptic fits)
  • Peeling skin or red, bluish patches on the skin
  • Inflammation or blockage of blood vessels in the brain
  • Temporary paralysis or problems with movement, vision, or speech (these may be signs of brain blood vessel problems)
  • Uncontrolled muscle twitching affecting the eyes, head, neck, body, and nervous system
  • Reduced number of blood cells (red, white, and platelets), which can make you more prone to infections, bleeding, or bruising
  • A sudden rise in body temperature, very high blood pressure, and severe seizures (neuroleptic malignant syndrome). It is not certain if this is caused by methylphenidate or other medicines taken at the same time.
  • Repeated unwanted thoughts
  • Unexplained fainting, chest pain, or shortness of breath (these may be signs of heart problems)
  • Prolonged, sometimes painful erections, or an increased number of erections
  • Dry eyes
  • Constipation
  • Chest discomfort
  • Blood in urine
  • Lethargy
  • Tremors or shaking
  • Increased urge to urinate
  • Muscle pain, muscle twitching
  • Shortness of breath or chest pain
  • Feeling hot
  • High liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests)
  • Anger, restlessness or crying, talking too much, excessive awareness of surroundings, sleep problems
  • Feeling confused or disoriented
  • Vision problems or double vision
  • Breast swelling in men
  • Redness of skin, red bumpy rash
  • Muscle cramps
  • Small red spots on the skin
  • Abnormal liver function, including sudden liver failure and coma
  • Changes in test results, including liver and blood tests
  • Abnormal thoughts, lack of feelings, repeated compulsive actions, obsessive thoughts about single things
  • Numbness in fingers and toes, tingling, and changes in color (from white to blue, then red) when cold (Raynaud's phenomenon)
  • Migraine
  • Dilated pupils
  • Very high fever
  • Slow, fast, or extra heartbeats
  • Severe epileptic seizure (grand mal seizure)
  • Delusions
  • Severe stomach pain, often with nausea and vomiting
  • Inability to control urination (urinary incontinence)
  • Jaw muscle spasms making it hard to open your mouth (trismus)
  • Nosebleed

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you or your child are allergic to methylphenidate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take this medicine if you or your child have an overactive thyroid gland.
  • Do not take this medicine if you or your child have high pressure in your eyes (glaucoma).
  • Do not take this medicine if you or your child have a tumor on your adrenal gland.
  • Do not take this medicine if you or your child have an eating disorder like anorexia nervosa, where you don't feel hungry or want to eat.

  • Do not take this medicine if you or your child have very high blood pressure or narrowed blood vessels that may cause pain in your arms and legs.
  • Do not take this medicine if you or your child have ever had heart problems, such as a heart attack, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, heart failure, or a congenital heart defect.
  • Do not take this medicine if you or your child have ever had problems with blood vessels in the brain, such as a stroke, aneurysm, narrowed or blocked blood vessels, or vasculitis.
  • Do not take this medicine if you or your child are taking or have taken certain antidepressants called MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) in the last 14 days.
  • Do not take this medicine if you or your child have severe mental health problems, such as psychopathic or borderline personality disorder, unusual thoughts or sights (schizophrenia), or severe mood disorders like suicidal thoughts, severe depression, or mania.
  • Boys and young men may experience prolonged, painful erections. If an erection lasts more than 2 hours, especially if it's painful, contact a doctor right away.
  • If you are taking certain antidepressants, combining them with methylphenidate can lead to a serious condition called serotonin syndrome, causing confusion, restlessness, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching, or a fast heartbeat. Seek medical help immediately if these occur.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your child are having surgery. You should not take methylphenidate on the day of surgery if a certain type of anesthetic is used, as it can cause a sudden increase in blood pressure.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine. Alcohol can make the side effects of this medicine worse.
  • If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using this medicine.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness, problems focusing, or blurred vision. If you experience these, avoid driving, operating machines, cycling, or climbing.
