How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will start with a low dose and increase it gradually as needed.

Method

Take one tablet once a day in the morning with a glass of water. Swallow the tablet whole; do not chew, split, or crush it. It can be taken with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 54 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Nervousness, feeling agitated
  • Trouble sleeping, insomnia
  • Joint pain
  • Blurred vision
  • Dry mouth, thirst
  • Fever
  • Changes in sex drive
  • Unusual hair loss or thinning
  • Muscle tension, muscle cramps
  • Loss of appetite or reduced appetite
  • Inability to get or keep an erection
  • Itching, rash, or raised red itchy rash (hives)
  • Unusual drowsiness or tiredness
  • Severe teeth grinding (bruxism)
  • Feeling of panic
  • Tingling, prickling, or numbness of the skin
  • Cough, sore throat, or nose/throat irritation; upper respiratory infection, sinus infection
  • High blood pressure, rapid heart rate (tachycardia)
  • Dizziness, feeling of weakness, uncontrolled movements, hyperactivity
  • Aggression, agitation, nervousness, depression, irritability, tension, restlessness, and abnormal behavior
  • Indigestion or stomach upset, stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, uncomfortable feeling in stomach, and vomiting
  • Excessive sweating
  • Palpitations (irregular heartbeat)
  • Mood changes or shifts in personality
RARE
  • Suicidal thoughts or feelings
  • Seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not there (signs of psychosis)
  • Uncontrolled speech or body movements (Tourette's syndrome)
  • Allergic reaction symptoms such as severe rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or difficulty breathing
  • Unusual excitement, overactivity, and impulsiveness (mania)
  • Heart attack
  • Sudden death
  • Suicide attempt
  • Seizures (epileptic seizures)
  • Flaking skin or red, bluish patches on the skin
  • Inflammation or blockage of blood vessels in the brain
  • Temporary paralysis or problems with movement and vision, speech difficulties (may indicate brain blood vessel problems)
  • Uncontrolled muscle twitching in eyes, head, neck, body, and nervous system
  • Reduced number of blood cells (red or white blood cells, platelets), which can increase risk of infection and bleeding
  • Sudden increase in body temperature, very high blood pressure, and severe seizures (neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
  • Dry eyes
  • Constipation
  • Chest discomfort
  • Blood in urine
  • Listlessness
  • Tremors or shaking
  • Increased urge to urinate
  • Muscle pain, muscle twitching
  • Shortness of breath or chest pain
  • Feeling of warmth
  • Elevated liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests)
  • Anger, restlessness or tearfulness, excessive talkativeness, exaggerated awareness of surroundings, sleep problems
  • Feeling disoriented or confused
  • Vision disturbances or double vision
  • Breast swelling in men
  • Skin redness, red, bumpy rash
  • Small red spots on the skin
  • Abnormal liver function, including acute liver failure and coma
  • Changes in lab test results, including liver and blood tests
  • Abnormal thoughts, lack of feelings or sensations, repetitive compulsive actions, obsessive thoughts about single things
  • Numbness, tingling, and color changes (white to blue then red) in fingers and toes when cold (Raynaud's phenomenon)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to methylphenidate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have serious heart problems, very high blood pressure, or a problem with your brain's blood vessels (like a stroke).
  • Do not take if you have an adrenal gland tumor, high eye pressure (glaucoma), or an overactive thyroid.
  • Do not take if you have severe mental health problems like psychosis, schizophrenia, severe depression, suicidal thoughts, or mania.
  • Do not take if you have an eating disorder (like anorexia) or have taken certain antidepressants (MAO inhibitors) in the last 14 days.

  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, seizures, or a history of alcohol or drug abuse.
  • If you get a painful erection lasting more than 2 hours, contact a doctor immediately.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can worsen side effects.
  • This medicine may make you feel dizzy or have blurred vision, so be careful when driving or using machines.
