How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will usually start with a low dose, typically 20 mg once daily, and increase it gradually if needed.

Method

Take the capsule by mouth once daily in the morning, with or without food. Swallow the capsule whole with water. Do not crush or chew it. If you have trouble swallowing the capsule whole, you can carefully open it and sprinkle the contents over a small amount of cold, soft food, like applesauce, and eat it immediately.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 80 mg. For children and adolescents, the maximum dose is 60 mg.

RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions (e.g., swelling of face, difficulty breathing)
  • Suicidal thoughts or thoughts of harming yourself
  • Seeing or hearing things that aren't real (psychosis)
  • Uncontrolled movements or speech (tics)
  • Severe chest pain, fainting, or signs of heart problems
  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Muscle spasms
  • Paralysis or problems with movement, vision, or speech
  • Changes in blood cell counts (more infections, bleeding easily)
  • Severe changes in mood (mania, severe depression, extreme anger)
  • Prolonged or painful erections in boys/men
  • Severe stomach pain with vomiting
  • Migraines
  • Problems with blood vessels in the brain (like a stroke)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to methylphenidate or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are taking or have taken MAO inhibitor medicines for depression in the last 14 days.
  • Do not take if you have a thyroid problem, high eye pressure (glaucoma), an adrenal gland tumor (pheochromocytoma), or an eating disorder like anorexia.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your child have heart problems, high blood pressure, or a family history of sudden heart issues.
  • Inform your doctor about any mental health issues, such as severe depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, or thoughts of harming yourself.

  • Tell your doctor if you or your child have a history of seizures (fits) or epilepsy.
  • Boys and men may experience unexpected prolonged and painful erections. Seek medical attention if an erection lasts more than 2 hours.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can worsen side effects.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience these effects.
  • Long-term use in children might slow down growth. Your doctor will monitor your child's weight and height.
