How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will usually start with a low dose, often 20 mg once a day.

Method

Take this medicine once a day by mouth, with or without food, but not too late in the morning to avoid sleep problems. Swallow the capsule whole with water. Do not crush or chew the capsule or its contents. If you cannot swallow the capsule whole, you can carefully open it and sprinkle the contents onto a small amount of soft food, like applesauce. Eat the entire mixture right away.

Important

The maximum daily dose for children and adolescents under 18 is 60 mg. For adults, the maximum daily dose is 80 mg.

  • Feeling sick to your stomach (nausea)

  • Fast or uneven heartbeat
  • Mood swings or changes in personality
  • Weight loss (in adults)
  • Stomach pain, diarrhea, or vomiting
  • High blood pressure
  • Dizziness or shaking
  • Feeling tired
  • Itching or skin rash
  • Joint pain
  • Fever
RARE
  • Thoughts of hurting yourself
  • Seeing or hearing things that are not real, or having strange thoughts
  • Uncontrolled movements or speech (like Tourette's syndrome)
  • Serious allergic reactions like rash, swelling of the face/tongue, or trouble breathing
  • Feeling unusually excited, overactive, or uninhibited (mania)
  • Heart attack or sudden death
  • Seizures (fits)
  • Skin peeling, or purple-red spots on the skin
  • Uncontrolled muscle cramps
  • Problems with blood vessels in the brain (like stroke, paralysis, or problems with speech/vision)
  • Decrease in blood cell counts, which can lead to more infections, bleeding, or bruising
  • Sudden high fever, very high blood pressure, and severe muscle stiffness (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome)
  • Migraine
  • Unexplained fainting
  • Chest pain or shortness of breath (these can be signs of heart problems)
  • Constipation
  • Blood in your urine
  • Double vision or blurred vision
  • Abnormal liver function (shown in blood tests)
  • Anger, sadness, or anxiety
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Enlarged pupils
  • Breast enlargement in men
  • Numbness, tingling, or color changes in fingers/toes when cold (Raynaud's phenomenon)
  • Stuttering
  • Nosebleeds

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to methylphenidate or any other ingredient.
  • Do not take if you have a serious heart condition, very high blood pressure, or a history of stroke.
  • Do not take if you have an adrenal gland tumor (pheochromocytoma) or high eye pressure (glaucoma).
  • Do not take if you are taking or have taken certain depression medicines called MAO inhibitors in the last 14 days.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can worsen side effects.
