How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will usually start with a low dose, typically 18 mg once a day, and may increase it weekly as needed.

Method

Take one tablet whole with a glass of water every morning. Do not chew, divide, or crush it. You can take it with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 54 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Feeling nervous or having trouble sleeping
  • Nausea (feeling sick) or dry mouth
  • Joint pain or blurred vision
  • Thirst or difficulty falling asleep
  • Fever or decreased sexual desire
  • Unusual hair loss, muscle stiffness, or muscle cramps
  • Loss of appetite or problems getting/keeping an erection
  • Itching, rash, hives, or feeling unusually sleepy/tired
  • Teeth grinding or feeling panicky
  • Tingling, prickling, or numbness of the skin
  • Elevated liver enzyme levels, cough, sore throat, or nasal irritation
  • High blood pressure or fast heart rate
  • Dizziness, feeling weak, uncontrolled movements, or hyperactivity
  • Aggression, agitation, anxiety, depression, irritability, tension, nervousness, abnormal behavior, digestive problems, stomach pain, diarrhea, or vomiting
  • Excessive sweating or weight loss
RARE
  • Suicidal thoughts or feelings, seeing/feeling/hearing unreal things (signs of psychosis)
  • Uncontrolled speech or body movements (Tourette's syndrome)
  • Allergic reaction symptoms like rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face/lips/tongue, shortness of breath, wheezing or breathing difficulties
  • Unusual agitation, hyperactivity, and uninhibited behavior (mania)
  • Heart attack, sudden death, or suicide attempt
  • Seizures (convulsions), skin peeling, or purplish-red patches on skin
  • Inflammation or blockage of brain arteries
  • Temporary paralysis, problems with movement/vision, or speech difficulties (may indicate brain blood vessel problems)
  • Uncontrolled muscle twitching in eyes, head, neck, body, and nervous system
  • Decrease in blood cell count (red/white blood cells, platelets), increasing infection risk and bleeding/bruising
  • Sudden increase in body temperature, very high blood pressure, and severe convulsions (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome). The cause (methylphenidate or other medicines) is uncertain.
  • Recurrent unwanted thoughts
  • Unexplained fainting, chest pain, or shortness of breath (may indicate heart problems)
  • Prolonged and sometimes painful erections or increased erections
  • Dry eyes or constipation
  • Chest discomfort or blood in urine
  • Indifference, tremor or shaking, or frequent urination
  • Feeling of warmth, elevated liver values (in blood tests), anger, restlessness, crying, excessive talkativeness, heightened environmental awareness, or difficulty sleeping
  • Problems with sexual desire, confusion or disorientation, vision problems or double vision, breast swelling in men, or red, raised skin rashes
  • Muscle cramps, small red spots on the skin, liver dysfunction (including acute liver failure and coma), changes in blood/liver test results, abnormal thoughts, lack of feelings, repetitive actions, obsessive focus, or numbness/tingling and color changes in fingers/toes due to cold (Raynaud's phenomenon)
  • Migraine, dilated pupils, very high fever, slow/fast/extra heartbeats, or severe epileptic seizures (grand mal seizures)
  • Increased eye pressure, optic nerve damage due to blocked fluid drainage or sudden pressure increase
  • Delusions, severe stomach pain (often with nausea/vomiting), or brain blood vessel problems (stroke/inflammation/blockage)
  • Urinary incontinence, jaw muscle spasm (lockjaw), stuttering, or nosebleed

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if your child is allergic to methylphenidate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if your child has a thyroid problem.
  • Do not use if your child has glaucoma (high pressure in the eye).
  • Do not use if your child has had heart problems like a heart attack, irregular heartbeat, or a heart defect.
  • Do not use if your child has had problems with brain blood vessels, such as a stroke.

  • Do not use if your child is currently taking or has taken certain antidepressants called MAO inhibitors within the last 14 days.
  • Do not use if your child has severe mental health conditions, such as schizophrenia, severe depression with suicidal thoughts, or mania.
  • Talk to your doctor if your child has liver or kidney problems.
  • Talk to your doctor if your child has had seizures (fits) or epilepsy.
  • Talk to your doctor if your child has a history of alcohol or drug abuse.
  • Boys and young men may experience painful or prolonged erections. If an erection lasts more than 2 hours and is painful, contact a doctor immediately.
