How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will start with a small dose, usually 18 mg once a day, and may increase it by 18 mg weekly, aiming for the lowest effective dose.

Method

Take Methylphenidate Sandoz once daily in the morning with a glass of water. Swallow the tablet whole; do not chew, divide, or crush it. It can be taken with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 54 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Nervousness
  • Insomnia (difficulty sleeping)
  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth
  • Joint pain
  • Blurred vision
  • Tension headache
  • Thirst
  • Fever
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Unusual hair loss or thinning
  • Muscle stiffness, muscle cramps
  • Loss or decreased appetite
  • Erectile dysfunction (inability to achieve or maintain an erection)
  • Itching, rash, or raised, red itchy rash (hives)
  • Abnormal sleepiness or drowsiness, feeling tired
  • Severe teeth grinding (bruxism)
  • Feeling of panic
  • Burning or tingling sensation or numbness on the skin
  • Increased liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests)
  • Cough, sore throat or nose and throat irritation, upper respiratory infection, sinusitis
  • High blood pressure, fast heart rate (tachycardia)
  • Dizziness (vertigo), feeling weak, uncontrollable movements, hyperactivity
  • Feeling aggressive, agitated, worried, depressed, irritable, tense, nervous and showing abnormal behavior
  • Digestion problems or stomach upset, stomach pain, diarrhea, discomfort in the stomach and vomiting
  • Excessive sweating
  • Weight loss
RARE
  • Suicidal thoughts or feelings
  • Seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not real (signs of psychosis)
  • Uncontrolled speech or body movements (Tourette's syndrome)
  • Allergic reaction symptoms like rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other body parts, shortness of breath, wheezing, or breathing difficulties
  • Exceptional agitation, hyperactivity and unrestrained behavior (mania)
  • Heart attack
  • Sudden death
  • Seizures (epilepsy)
  • Peeling skin or purplish-red patches on the skin
  • Inflammation or narrowing of brain arteries
  • Temporary paralysis or problems with movement, vision, or speech (may indicate brain blood vessel problems)
  • Uncontrolled muscle twitching in the eyes, head, neck, body, and nervous system
  • Decreased number of blood cells (red, white, and platelets), which can increase risk of infection, bleeding, and bruising
  • Sudden increase in body temperature, very high blood pressure, and severe seizures (malignant neuroleptic syndrome)
  • Persistent unwanted thoughts
  • Unexplained fainting, chest pain, shortness of breath (may indicate heart problems)
  • Prolonged and sometimes painful erections, or increased number of erections
  • Migraine
  • Dilated pupils
  • Very high fever
  • Slow, fast, or extra heartbeats
  • Severe epileptic seizure (grand mal seizure)
  • Increased eye pressure
  • Optic nerve damage due to high eye pressure blocking fluid drainage channels
  • Delusions
  • Severe abdominal pain, often with nausea and vomiting
  • Brain blood vessel problems (stroke, cerebral arteritis or occlusion)
  • Inability to control urination (incontinence)
  • Jaw muscle spasms making it difficult to open the mouth (trismus)
  • Stuttering
  • Nosebleed
  • Growth changes (slowed growth in some children)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if your child is allergic to methylphenidate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if your child has or has had serious heart problems, such as a heart attack, irregular heartbeat, or chest pain.
  • Do not use if your child has serious mental health problems, such as psychosis, schizophrenia, suicidal thoughts, severe depression, or mania.
  • Do not use if your child is currently taking or has taken certain antidepressant medicines (MAO inhibitors) in the last 14 days, as this can cause a sudden and dangerous rise in blood pressure.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can worsen side effects. Some foods and medicines can also contain alcohol.
