How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will start with a low dose, usually 18 mg once a day, and may increase it slowly.

Method

Take one tablet whole with water in the morning, with or without food. Do not chew, break, or crush the tablet.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 72 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Irregular heartbeats (palpitations)
  • Mood changes, mood swings, or changes in personality
  • Headache
  • Nervousness
  • Sleeplessness
  • Joint pain
  • Difficulty focusing eyes
  • Tension headache
  • Dry mouth, thirst
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Fever
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Unusual hair loss or thinning
  • Muscle stiffness, muscle cramps
  • Loss of appetite or reduced appetite
  • Inability to get or keep an erection
  • Itching, rash, or raised red itchy rash (hives)
  • Unusual drowsiness or tiredness
  • Teeth grinding (bruxism)
  • Feeling of panic
  • Tingling, prickling, or numb feeling on the skin
  • Increased levels of liver enzymes in the blood
  • Cough, sore throat or nose, throat irritation; upper respiratory infection, sinus infection
  • High blood pressure, fast heart rate (tachycardia)
  • Dizziness (vertigo), weakness, uncontrollable movements, hyperactivity
  • Aggression, agitation, anxiety, depression, irritability, tension, nervousness, and unusual behavior
  • Indigestion or stomach problems, stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, uncomfortable feeling in the stomach, and vomiting
  • Excessive sweating
  • Weight loss
RARE
  • Suicidal thoughts or feelings
  • Seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not real (signs of psychosis)
  • Uncontrollable speech or body movements (Tourette's syndrome)
  • Allergic reaction symptoms like rash, itching or hives, swelling of face, lips, tongue or other body parts, shortness of breath, wheezing or difficulty breathing.
  • Unusual excitement, overactivity, or disinhibition (mania)
  • Heart attack
  • Sudden death
  • Attempted suicide
  • Seizures (convulsions, epilepsy)
  • Flaking skin or red, bluish patches on the skin
  • Inflammation or blockage of blood vessels in the brain
  • Temporary paralysis or problems with movement, vision, or speech (may indicate brain blood vessel problems)
  • Uncontrolled muscle twitching in the eyes, head, neck, body, and nervous system
  • Reduced number of blood cells (red or white blood cells, platelets), which can increase risk of infection, bleeding, and bruising
  • Sudden high body temperature, very high blood pressure, and severe seizures (neuroleptic malignant syndrome). It is uncertain if this is caused by methylphenidate or other medicines taken at the same time.
  • Blurred vision, dry eyes
  • Constipation
  • Chest discomfort
  • Blood in urine
  • Sexual desire problems
  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Vision problems or double vision
  • Swelling of breasts in men
  • Redness of skin, red, bumpy rash
  • Muscle cramps
  • Small red spots on the skin
  • Abnormal liver function, including sudden liver failure and coma
  • Changes in test results, including liver and blood tests
  • Unusual thoughts, lack of feelings, repetitive actions, obsessive focus on one thing
  • Numbness, tingling, and color changes (white to blue then red) in fingers and toes when cold (Raynaud's phenomenon)
  • Migraine
  • Dilated pupils
  • Very high fever
  • Slow, fast, or extra heartbeats
  • Severe epileptic seizure (grand mal seizure)
  • Delusions
  • Brain blood vessel problems (stroke, brain artery inflammation or blockage)
  • Inability to control urination (urinary incontinence)
  • Jaw muscle spasm making it hard to open mouth (lockjaw)
  • Stuttering
  • Nosebleed
  • Slowed growth (weight or height)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to methylphenidate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you or your child has a thyroid problem.
  • Do not take if you or your child has high eye pressure (glaucoma).
  • Do not take if you or your child has a tumor on the adrenal gland (phaeochromocytoma).
  • Do not take if you or your child has an eating disorder like anorexia, where you don't feel hungry or want to eat.

  • Do not take if you or your child has very high blood pressure or narrow blood vessels that cause pain in arms and legs.
  • Do not take if you or your child has or has had heart problems like a heart attack, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, heart failure, or a congenital heart defect.
  • Do not take if you or your child has had problems with brain blood vessels, such as a stroke, aneurysm, blocked vessels, or vessel inflammation.
  • Do not take if you or your child is currently taking or has taken certain antidepressants called MAO inhibitors in the last 14 days.
  • Do not take if you or your child has severe mental health problems like psychosis, schizophrenia, severe mood disorder with suicidal thoughts, deep sadness, feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, or mania (unusual excitement, overactivity).
  • Boys and young men may have unexpected, long-lasting erections. If an erection lasts more than 2 hours and is painful, contact a doctor immediately.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness, trouble focusing, or blurry vision. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience these effects.
