How to Use

Dosage

The doctor will usually start with a low dose and may increase it by 18 mg per day, not more often than once a week. For children (6 years and older) and adults who haven't used methylphenidate before, the recommended starting dose is 18 mg once daily.

Method

Take the tablet whole with a glass of water in the morning. Do not chew, divide, or crush the tablet, as the active substance is released slowly. It can be taken with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose for children (6 years and older) is 54 mg. For adults, the maximum daily dose is 72 mg.

  • Severe teeth grinding (bruxism)
  • Feeling of panic
  • Tingling, prickling, or numb feeling on the skin
  • Increased level of liver enzymes in the blood
  • Cough, sore throat or nose irritation, upper respiratory infection, sinus infection
  • High blood pressure, fast heart rate (tachycardia)
  • Dizziness (vertigo), feeling weak, uncontrolled movements, hyperactivity
  • Aggression, agitation, anxiety, depressed mood, irritability, tension, nervousness, and abnormal behavior
  • Digestive problems or stomach discomfort, stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, unpleasant feeling in the stomach, and vomiting
  • Excessive sweating
  • Weight loss
RARE
  • Suicidal thoughts or feelings
  • Seeing, feeling, or hearing things that aren't real (signs of psychosis)
  • Uncontrolled speech or body movements (Tourette's syndrome)
  • Allergic reaction symptoms like rash, itching, hives, swelling of face, lips, tongue or other body parts, shortness of breath, wheezing, or difficulty breathing
  • Feeling unusually excited, overactive, or unrestrained (mania)
  • Heart attack
  • Sudden death
  • Attempted suicide
  • Convulsions (seizures, epilepsy)
  • Flaking skin or red, bluish patches on the skin
  • Inflammation or blockage of blood vessels in the brain
  • Temporary paralysis or problems with movement or vision, speech difficulties (these can be signs of brain blood vessel problems)
  • Uncontrolled muscle jerks in eyes, head, neck, body, and nerves
  • Reduced number of blood cells (red or white blood cells, platelets), which can increase risk of infection, bleeding, and bruising
  • Sudden increase in body temperature, very high blood pressure, and severe convulsions (neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
  • Repeated unwanted thoughts
  • Unexplained fainting, chest pain, or shortness of breath (may be signs of heart problems)
  • Long-lasting or sometimes painful erections, or an increased number of erections
  • Blurred vision, dry eyes
  • Constipation
  • Chest discomfort
  • Blood in urine
  • Lack of energy
  • Shaking or trembling
  • Increased need to urinate
  • Muscle pain, muscle twitching
  • Shortness of breath or chest pain
  • Feeling of warmth
  • Increased liver enzyme values (seen in blood tests)
  • Anger, restlessness, crying spells, talking too much, being overly aware of surroundings, or difficulty sleeping
  • Problems with sexual desire
  • Feeling confused or disoriented
  • Vision problems or double vision
  • Breast swelling in men
  • Skin redness, red bumpy rash
  • Muscle cramps
  • Small red spots on the skin
  • Abnormal liver function, including acute liver failure and coma
  • Changes in lab test results, including liver and blood tests
  • Abnormal thoughts, lack of feelings or sensations, endlessly repeating actions, obsessive focus on one thing
  • Numbness, tingling, and color changes (white to blue, then red) in fingers and toes when cold (Raynaud's phenomenon)
  • Migraine
  • Enlarged pupils
  • Very high fever
  • Slow, fast, or extra heartbeats
  • Severe epileptic seizure (grand mal seizure)
  • Delusions
  • Brain blood vessel problems (stroke, cerebral arteritis, or cerebral occlusion)
  • Inability to control urination (incontinence)
  • Jaw muscle spasm making it hard to open the mouth (trismus)
  • Stuttering
  • Nosebleed

Important Warnings

  • You or your child are allergic to methylphenidate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • You or your child have a thyroid problem.
  • You or your child have high pressure in the eye (glaucoma).
  • You or your child have a tumor on your adrenal gland (pheochromocytoma).
  • You or your child have an eating disorder (like anorexia nervosa) and don't feel hungry or want to eat.

  • You or your child have very high blood pressure or narrowing of blood vessels, which can cause pain in arms and legs.
  • You or your child have had heart problems, like a heart attack, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, heart failure, heart disease, or a congenital heart defect.
  • You or your child have had problems with blood vessels in the brain, such as a stroke, aneurysm, narrowed or blocked blood vessels, or inflamed blood vessels (vasculitis).
  • You or your child are currently taking or have taken certain antidepressants called MAO inhibitors within the last 14 days.
  • You or your child have serious mental health issues, such as psychopathic or borderline personality disorder, unusual thoughts or visions, or a condition called schizophrenia.
  • You or your child have severe mood disorder symptoms, such as suicidal thoughts, severe depression with intense sadness, feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness, or mania with unusual excitement, overactivity, and lack of restraint.
