How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on your condition. For adult rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, or psoriatic arthritis, the usual starting dose is 7.5-15 mg once a week. For acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and children, your doctor will specify the dose. Elderly patients usually receive a lower dose.

Method

Take Methotrexat Accord by mouth once a week, on the same day each week. You can take it with or without food. Drink some water after taking the tablet to ensure you've swallowed the full dose.

Important

Do not take more than your doctor prescribes for your weekly dose, and never take more than once a week. Taking too much can be deadly.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Infections
  • Changes in blood cell counts (e.g., low white or red blood cells, or low platelets)
  • Headache, tiredness, dizziness
  • Lung inflammation (pneumonia) with dry cough, shortness of breath, and fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Skin rash, redness, and itching
  • Loss of appetite, feeling sick, vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion, and sores in the mouth or throat
  • Higher levels of liver enzymes in blood tests
RARE
  • Lumps in the neck, groin, or armpits (like lymphoma), sometimes with back pain, weight loss, or night sweats
  • Very strong allergic reactions
  • Diabetes (high blood sugar)
  • Feeling sad or depressed
  • Feeling confused, having seizures, or changes in mood
  • Damage to the lungs
  • Sores or bleeding in the stomach or gut
  • Liver problems, and low protein in your blood
  • Skin rashes or hives, skin becoming very sensitive to the sun (like a sunburn), brown spots on skin, hair loss, more rheumatoid lumps under the skin, shingles, painful psoriasis, slow wound healing, acne, red or purple spots on the skin from bleeding, psoriasis getting worse with UV treatment, and skin damage that looks like sunburn after radiation
  • Pain in joints or muscles, and weak bones (osteoporosis)
  • Kidney problems, bladder inflammation or sores (possibly with blood in urine), painful urination, less or no urine production, and abnormal levels of salts in the blood
  • Inflammation and sores in the vagina
  • A blood problem with very large red blood cells
  • Weakness or limited movement (can affect one side of the body)
  • Serious problems with vision
  • Inflammation of the sac around the heart, and fluid build-up around the heart
  • Low blood pressure, and blood clots
  • Sore throat (tonsillitis), temporary stopping of breathing, and asthma
  • Inflammation of the pancreas, inflammation in the digestive tract, bloody stools, inflamed gums, and indigestion
  • Sudden liver inflammation
  • Broken bones
  • Less sperm production, and irregular periods
  • Body-wide infections caused by viruses, fungi, or bacteria
  • Severe problem with bone marrow (anemia), and swollen glands
  • Lymphoma-like disorders (a large increase in white blood cells)
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Pain, muscle weakness, a metallic taste in the mouth, inflammation of the brain's lining that can cause paralysis or vomiting, and numbness
  • Problems with speaking or language, feeling sleepy or tired, confusion, strange feelings in the head, brain swelling, and ringing in the ears
  • Red eyes, and damage to the back of the eye (retina)
  • Fluid in the lungs, and lung infections
  • Vomiting blood, and severe gut problems
  • Liver failure (when the liver stops working)
  • Fingernail infections, nails coming off, boils, swollen small blood vessels, damage to skin blood vessels, and allergic swelling of blood vessels
  • Protein in the urine
  • Loss of sex drive, problems with erections, vaginal discharge, not being able to have children, and breast enlargement in men
  • Fever
  • Changes in the white part of the brain (leukoencephalopathy)
  • Bleeding from the lungs
  • Red and peeling skin
  • Damage to the jawbone (caused by a strong growth of white blood cells)
  • Swelling

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to methotrexate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney problems.
  • Do not take if you have liver problems.
  • Do not take if you have serious blood disorders like very low white blood cells, platelets, or severe anemia.
  • Do not take if you drink a lot of alcohol.

  • Do not take if your immune system is weak.
  • Do not take if you have a severe infection, such as tuberculosis or HIV.
  • Do not take if you have ulcers in your stomach or gut.
  • Do not take if you have inflammation or sores in your mouth.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless it is for cancer treatment.
  • Do not take if you have recently received or are about to receive a live vaccine.
  • Even small doses can cause serious side effects. Your doctor will do regular tests to catch them early. It's very important to attend these appointments.
  • This medicine can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Avoid strong sunlight and tanning beds. Use protective clothing and high SPF sunscreen.
  • Diarrhea can be a side effect and treatment might need to be stopped. Tell your doctor if you have diarrhea.
  • If you cough up or spit blood, contact your doctor right away as this could be a sign of lung bleeding.
  • This medicine can affect sperm and egg production, and can cause birth defects or miscarriage. Women should avoid getting pregnant during treatment and for at least 6 months after. Men should avoid fathering a child during treatment and for at least 3 months after.
  • This medicine can make you feel tired or dizzy, affecting your ability to drive or use machines. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel this way.
  • This medicine contains lactose. If you have a sugar intolerance, talk to your doctor before taking it.
