How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the exact dose; for many conditions, it's usually between 7.5 and 15 mg.

Method

Take the tablet by mouth with some water, once a week, on the same day each week, with or without food, as your doctor tells you.

Important

Do not take this medicine more than once a week. Taking too much can be very dangerous or even deadly.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion
  • Sores or inflammation in the mouth and throat
  • Higher liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests)
  • Infections
  • Fewer blood cells (which can cause anemia or increase infection risk)
  • Headache, tiredness, dizziness
  • Lung problems (like inflammation, dry cough, shortness of breath, and fever)
  • Diarrhea
  • Skin rash, redness, itching
RARE
  • Swollen lymph nodes (lymphoma)
  • Severe allergic reactions
  • Diabetes, depression
  • Confusion, seizures, or nerve problems (like muscle weakness, changes in taste or sensation, paralysis, speech problems, or brain swelling)
  • Lung damage or fluid in the lungs
  • Bleeding in the stomach or gut, bloody stools, or vomiting blood
  • Liver damage or failure
  • Skin problems like hives, increased sun sensitivity, hair loss, shingles, slow wound healing, nail infections, acne, or red/purple spots on the skin
  • Joint or muscle pain, weak bones (osteoporosis)
  • Kidney problems (like painful or reduced urination, or kidney failure)
  • Vaginal inflammation or sores, fertility issues (like reduced sperm production or erectile problems)
  • Heart sac inflammation, low blood pressure, blood clots
  • Tonsillitis, asthma, or breathing stops
  • Pancreatitis or gum inflammation
  • Severe vision problems, red eyes, or retinal damage
  • Swollen glands, fever, general weakness
  • Bleeding from the lungs

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to methotrexate or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney, liver, or blood problems (like severe anemia).
  • Do not drink a lot of alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a weak immune system or a serious infection (like tuberculosis or HIV).
  • Tell your doctor if you have stomach ulcers or mouth sores.

  • Do not take if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding (unless for cancer treatment), as this medicine can harm an unborn baby.
  • Avoid live vaccines while taking this medicine or shortly before/after.
  • This medicine can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Avoid strong sunlight and tanning beds.
  • If you get severe diarrhea, tell your doctor, as treatment might need to be stopped.
  • This medicine can make you tired or dizzy. Do not drive or operate machines if you feel this way.
  • If you have a sugar intolerance (lactose intolerance), talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
  • Men should avoid getting a woman pregnant or donating sperm during treatment and for at least 3 months after stopping this medicine.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you or your caregiver notice new or worsening neurological symptoms like muscle weakness, vision changes, or confusion.
