How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the typical dose is 1 tablet taken twice a day.

Method

Take the tablet with or without food and drink, preferably in the morning and evening after urinating. You can split or crush the tablet and take it with water if you have trouble swallowing.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 2 tablets.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to methenamine hippurate or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver problems, severe kidney problems, severe dehydration, or acute kidney inflammation.
  • Do not use if you have metabolic acidosis (too much acid in your body, which can cause fast heartbeat, headache, and nausea) or gout.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking antacids (used for heartburn) or acetazolamide (used for glaucoma), as they can make this medicine less effective.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking sulfonamide antibiotics, as they can increase the risk of crystals forming in your urine.

  • If you need a urine test, tell the doctor or nurse you are taking this medicine, as it can affect test results for some substances (e.g., steroids).
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, planning to become pregnant, or think you might be pregnant, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine.
  • Do not swallow the desiccant (drying agent) found in the bottle.
  • Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
  • Talk to your doctor before stopping the treatment.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Has modest efficacy. Useless in persons with urinary catheters. Avoid use in moderately severe renal impairment. (updated 4.12.2023)
