How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults is 500 mg once a day. Your doctor may adjust your dose after about 2 weeks based on your blood sugar levels.

Method

Take your tablet(s) once a day with your evening meal. If your doctor tells you to take it twice a day, always take it with food. Swallow tablets whole with water; do not chew, break, or crush them.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 2000 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea, feeling sick (nausea), being sick (vomiting), stomach pain, or not feeling like eating. These usually go away within 2 weeks if you continue taking the medicine, especially if taken with or right after food.
  • Taste changes.
RARE
  • Low levels of vitamin B12 in your blood, which can lead to anemia (feeling tired, weak).
  • Skin reactions like redness, itching, or hives (itchy rash).
  • Lactic acidosis (a very serious condition causing symptoms like vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, extreme tiredness, trouble breathing, slow heartbeat, and low body temperature). Seek immediate medical help.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Metformin Viatris if you are allergic to metformin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take Metformin Viatris if you have severe kidney problems or long-term liver problems.
  • Do not take Metformin Viatris if your diabetes is not well controlled, with very high blood sugar, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, or if you have diabetic ketoacidosis or lactic acidosis (a serious condition where too much acid builds up in the blood).
  • Do not take Metformin Viatris if you are severely dehydrated (lost a lot of body fluid), have a severe infection, acute heart failure, recently had a heart attack, or drink a lot of alcohol. These conditions can increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
  • Stop taking Metformin Viatris immediately and contact your doctor or nearest hospital if you develop symptoms of lactic acidosis, such as vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, feeling very tired, trouble breathing, or a slow heartbeat and low body temperature. This is an emergency.

  • Stop taking Metformin Viatris and seek immediate medical help if you notice signs of liver problems, like yellowing of your skin or eyes (jaundice).
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor. This medicine is generally not recommended during pregnancy (insulin might be needed) or while breastfeeding.
  • Inform your doctor if you are going to have surgery or an X-ray where a special dye is injected. You might need to stop Metformin Viatris for a short time before and after these procedures.
