How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults is 500 mg once a day. Your doctor may adjust the dose after about 2 weeks based on your blood sugar levels.

Method

Take tablets once a day with your evening meal. If your doctor tells you to, you may take them twice a day, always with food. Swallow each tablet whole with a glass of water; do not chew, break, or crush them.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 2000 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Vomiting (being sick)
  • Stomach ache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Taste disturbance
RARE
  • Low vitamin B12 levels, which can lead to anemia (low red blood cells).
  • Skin reactions like redness, itching, and hives.
  • Lactic acidosis: vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, general feeling of being unwell and severe tiredness, difficulty breathing, decreased body temperature, and slow heartbeat. This is a very serious side effect.
  • Abnormal liver test results or hepatitis (liver inflammation) which can cause yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice). This is a very serious side effect.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to metformin or any other ingredient in the medicine.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe liver problems or severe kidney problems.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have uncontrolled diabetes, severe infections, serious heart problems, or breathing difficulties.
  • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption as it increases the risk of a rare but very serious side effect called lactic acidosis.
  • Stop taking this medicine and seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms of lactic acidosis (e.g., vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, severe tiredness, difficulty breathing, low body temperature, slow heartbeat).
