How to Use

Dosage

The starting dose is usually 500 mg of Metformin Stada once a day. Your doctor may adjust the dose after about two weeks based on your blood sugar levels.

Method

Take the tablets by mouth once a day, usually with your evening meal. Swallow them whole with water; do not chew or crush them. In some cases, your doctor might tell you to take them twice a day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 2,000 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Digestive problems (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, loss of appetite). These are usually temporary and improve when taken with meals.
  • Taste disturbances.
  • Low vitamin B12 levels, with symptoms like extreme tiredness, sore tongue, tingling, or pale/yellow skin.
RARE
  • Lactic acidosis: vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, general feeling of unwellness and severe tiredness, difficulty breathing, decreased body temperature, and slow heartbeat. Stop treatment immediately and contact a doctor or nearest hospital.
  • Abnormal liver function tests and liver inflammation (hepatitis), which can cause tiredness, loss of appetite, weight loss, and yellowing of the skin or eyes. Stop treatment immediately and contact a doctor.
  • Skin reactions, such as redness, itching, or hives.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to metformin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have liver problems.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney failure or impaired kidney function.
  • Do not take if your diabetes is poorly controlled, with very high blood sugar, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, lactic acidosis, or ketoacidosis.
  • Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor if you have severe dehydration (such as from prolonged diarrhea, vomiting, fever, or not drinking enough fluids).

  • Do not take if you have a severe infection, such as a lung or kidney infection.
  • Do not take if you have heart failure, recently had a heart attack, severe circulation problems, or breathing difficulties.
  • Avoid drinking a lot of alcohol, as it can increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
  • Tell your doctor if you are going to have major surgery or an X-ray scan with contrast. You may need to stop this medicine temporarily.
  • Stop taking this medicine and seek immediate medical help if you have symptoms of lactic acidosis (such as vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, severe tiredness, difficulty breathing, low body temperature, and slow heartbeat).
