How to Use

Dosage

Start with 500 mg once daily, usually with the evening meal. Your doctor may adjust the dose based on blood sugar levels.

Method

Take the tablets whole with food and a glass of water. Do not chew, break, or crush the tablets.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 2000 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Digestive problems like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and loss of appetite. These usually get better within about 2 weeks. Taking the medicine with or just after a meal can help.
  • Taste disturbance (e.g., metallic taste).
  • Low vitamin B12 levels in the blood, which can cause extreme tiredness, sore tongue, tingling, and pale or yellow skin.
RARE
  • Lactic acidosis (a very rare but serious side effect, especially if kidneys don't work well). Symptoms include severe nausea, stomach pain, muscle cramps, feeling very tired, and trouble breathing.
  • Abnormal liver function tests or liver inflammation (symptoms like tiredness, loss of appetite, weight loss, with or without yellowing of skin or eyes). Stop taking and contact a doctor if this happens.
  • Skin reactions like redness, itching, and hives.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to metformin or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not take if you have serious liver or kidney problems.
  • Stop taking and call a doctor right away if you have symptoms of lactic acidosis (like severe nausea, stomach pain, muscle cramps, feeling very tired, or trouble breathing), as this is a very serious condition.
  • Stop taking this medicine temporarily if you are severely dehydrated (e.g., from severe vomiting, diarrhea, or fever) or have a serious infection or heart problem.
  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol, as it can increase the risk of a serious side effect called lactic acidosis.

  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Inform your doctor if you are going to have a major surgery or a special X-ray test that uses iodine contrast. You might need to stop this medicine for a short time.
