How to Use

Dosage

Usually, treatment starts with 500 mg once a day.

Method

Take the tablets whole with a glass of water, with food, usually with your evening meal. Do not chew, break, or crush them.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 2000 mg.

  • Low vitamin B12 levels in the blood, which can cause symptoms like severe tiredness, a sore or red tongue (glossitis), tingling (paresthesia), and pale or yellow skin.
RARE
  • Lactic acidosis. This is a very rare but serious side effect, especially in patients with poorly functioning kidneys. Symptoms are general (see Warnings section).
RARE
  • Abnormal liver function tests or liver inflammation, which can cause tiredness, loss of appetite, weight loss, and yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes.
RARE
  • Skin reactions like redness, itching, and hives.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to metformin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney or liver problems, or if your diabetes is not well-controlled, with symptoms like very high blood sugar, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, lactic acidosis, or ketoacidosis.
  • Do not take if you are severely dehydrated (e.g., from prolonged or severe diarrhea or repeated vomiting) or have a severe infection, as these can lead to kidney problems and increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
  • Do not take if you have acute heart problems, have recently had a heart attack, or have severe circulatory problems (e.g., shock) or breathing difficulties, as this can lead to tissue oxygen deficiency and increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
  • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption while taking this medicine, as it increases the risk of lactic acidosis.

  • Stop taking this medicine immediately and contact a doctor or the nearest hospital if you experience symptoms of lactic acidosis, such as vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, general feeling of unwellness, severe tiredness, difficulty breathing, decreased body temperature, or slow heartbeat, as this can lead to coma.
  • Inform your doctor if you are going to have a major surgery. You may need to stop taking the medicine for a period before and after the procedure.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.
  • Be careful when driving or operating machinery if you experience symptoms of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
