How to Use

Dosage

Start with 500 mg once a day, usually with your evening meal. Your doctor may adjust your dose.

Method

Always take tablets with food. Swallow them whole with a glass of water. Do not chew, break, or crush the tablets.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 2000 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Being sick (vomiting)
  • Stomach ache
  • Loss of appetite
RARE
  • Taste disturbance
  • Lowered levels of vitamin B12 in the blood or vitamin B12 deficiency (symptoms may include feeling very tired, sore and red tongue, tingling, and pale or yellow skin)
  • Lactic acidosis. This is a very rare but serious side effect.
  • Abnormal liver function tests or liver inflammation (symptoms may include tiredness, loss of appetite, weight loss, with or without yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • Skin reactions such as redness, itching, and hives

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Metformin Sandoz if you are allergic to metformin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take Metformin Sandoz if you have severe liver or kidney problems.
  • Do not take Metformin Sandoz if you have uncontrolled diabetes, severe infections, serious heart problems, or if your body is very dehydrated.
  • Do not use this medicine if you drink a lot of alcohol.
  • Stop taking Metformin Sandoz and contact a doctor or nearest hospital immediately if you have symptoms of lactic acidosis (such as vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, general tiredness, difficulty breathing, low body temperature, and slow heart rate), as this can be a dangerous condition.

  • Tell your doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant.
  • Temporarily stop Metformin Sandoz before X-ray scans that use iodine contrast or major surgery. Your doctor will give you specific instructions.
  • Be careful when driving or using machines if you are taking other diabetes medicines that can cause low blood sugar.
