How to Use

Dosage

You will usually start with 500 mg once a day. Your doctor may adjust your dose after about two weeks based on your blood sugar levels.

Method

Take the tablets whole with a glass of water during or right after a meal, usually with your evening meal. Do not crush, split, or chew them.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 2000 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea (feeling sick), vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, or loss of appetite. These usually improve within two weeks.
RARE
  • Taste disturbance.
  • Low vitamin B12 levels in the blood, which can cause extreme tiredness, a sore red tongue, tingling skin, or pale/yellowish skin.
  • Skin reactions like redness, itching, or hives (itchy rash).
  • Abnormal liver function tests or liver inflammation (hepatitis), which can lead to yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to metformin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have very high blood sugar that is not controlled, severe kidney or liver problems, or a serious infection.
  • Stop taking this medicine temporarily if you are severely dehydrated (e.g., from severe vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or not drinking enough fluids). Talk to your doctor.
  • Stop taking this medicine immediately and seek urgent medical help if you get symptoms of lactic acidosis, such as vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, feeling very tired, trouble breathing, low body temperature, or slow heartbeat.
  • Inform your doctor if you are going to have an X-ray test that uses iodine contrast or a major surgery, as you may need to stop this medicine beforehand.

  • Avoid drinking a lot of alcohol while taking this medicine, as it increases the risk of lactic acidosis.
  • This medicine is not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years old.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment or tissue hypoxia. May reduce the absorption of vitamin B12. Consider risk of lactic acidosis. The drug should be paused during fever, gastroenteritis or dehydration, and before surgery or imaging with a contrast agent. (updated 20.5.2024)
