How to Use

Dosage

Typically, treatment starts with 500 mg of Metformin Medical Valley daily.

Method

Take the tablets whole with a glass of water, usually once a day with your evening meal. Do not crush, break, or chew the tablets.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 2000 mg of Metformin Medical Valley.

RARE
  • Taste disturbances
  • Low vitamin B12 levels, causing extreme tiredness, sore or red tongue, tingling skin, or pale/yellowish skin
  • Skin reactions (e.g., redness, itching, hives)
  • Lactic acidosis (symptoms include vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, general discomfort, severe tiredness, breathing difficulties, low body temperature, slow heartbeat)
  • Liver problems or hepatitis, which can cause yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to metformin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have uncontrolled diabetes, severe high blood sugar, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, or severe conditions like ketoacidosis or lactic acidosis.
  • Do not use if you have severe kidney or liver problems, severe heart failure, breathing difficulties, or are very dehydrated.
  • Avoid drinking a lot of alcohol while taking this medicine, as it increases the risk of a serious side effect called lactic acidosis.
  • Stop taking this medicine temporarily and contact your doctor if you become very dehydrated (e.g., from severe vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or not drinking enough).

  • Stop taking this medicine immediately and seek urgent medical help if you experience symptoms of lactic acidosis, such as vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, feeling very unwell and tired, trouble breathing, lower body temperature, or a slow heartbeat.
  • Inform your doctor if you are having surgery or a medical imaging procedure that uses iodine contrast, as you may need to stop this medicine before and for some time after the procedure.
  • This medicine is not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years old.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment or tissue hypoxia. May reduce the absorption of vitamin B12. Consider risk of lactic acidosis. The drug should be paused during fever, gastroenteritis or dehydration, and before surgery or imaging with a contrast agent. (updated 20.5.2024)
