Metformin Accord is a medicine containing metformin, used to treat type 2 diabetes by helping to lower blood sugar levels, especially in overweight patients when diet and exercise alone are not enough.

How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 500 mg or 850 mg two or three times a day. For children and adolescents (10 years and older), the usual starting dose is 500 mg or 850 mg once a day.

Method

Take Metformin Accord with or after meals to avoid digestive side effects. Swallow tablets whole with a glass of water; do not crush or chew. If taking once daily, take with breakfast. If taking twice daily, take with breakfast and dinner. If taking three times daily, take with breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 3000 mg, divided into three doses. For children and adolescents (10 years and older), the maximum daily dose is 2000 mg, divided into two or three doses.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Digestive problems (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, loss of appetite)
COMMON
  • Taste disturbance
  • Low vitamin B12 levels in the blood, which can cause extreme tiredness, a sore and red tongue, tingling, or pale/yellow skin.
RARE
  • Lactic acidosis, a very rare but very serious complication, especially if your kidneys do not work properly. Symptoms include vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, general feeling of being unwell and severe tiredness, and difficulty breathing.
  • Abnormal liver function tests or hepatitis (liver inflammation) which can cause tiredness, loss of appetite, weight loss, and yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes.
  • Skin reactions like redness (erythema), itching, or an itchy rash (hives).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to metformin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have liver problems.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe kidney problems.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have uncontrolled diabetes with symptoms such as very high blood sugar, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, lactic acidosis, or ketoacidosis.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are severely dehydrated, for example, due to long-lasting or severe diarrhea or repeated vomiting.

  • Do not take this medicine if you have a severe infection, such as one affecting your lungs, airways, or kidneys.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are being treated for acute heart failure, have recently had a heart attack, or have severe circulatory problems (e.g., shock) or breathing difficulties.
  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol while taking Metformin Accord, as it can increase the risk of lactic acidosis, a very serious side effect.
  • Stop taking Metformin Accord and contact a doctor or hospital immediately if you experience symptoms of lactic acidosis (e.g., vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, general discomfort, severe tiredness, difficulty breathing, decreased body temperature, slow heartbeat), as it is a medical emergency that can lead to coma.
