How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 500 mg or 850 mg, taken 2-3 times a day. For children over 10, the usual starting dose is 500 mg or 850 mg once a day.

Method

Take Metformin Accord with or after a meal to reduce stomach upset. Do not crush or chew the tablets; swallow each tablet whole with a glass of water.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 3000 mg, divided into three doses. For children over 10, the maximum daily dose is 2000 mg, divided into two or three doses.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and loss of appetite. These are most common at the start of treatment.
  • Taste changes.
  • Low vitamin B12 levels, which can cause extreme tiredness, sore red tongue, tingling, or pale/yellow skin.
RARE
  • Lactic acidosis (a very serious condition, especially if kidneys don't work well). Symptoms include vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, severe tiredness, difficulty breathing, low body temperature, and slow heart rate.
  • Liver problems or hepatitis (liver inflammation), which can cause tiredness, loss of appetite, weight loss, or yellowing of the skin/eyes.
  • Skin reactions like redness, itching, or hives (itchy rash).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to metformin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver or kidney problems.
  • Do not take if your diabetes is poorly controlled, with very high blood sugar, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, or ketoacidosis (a build-up of ketones in the blood).
  • Stop taking Metformin Accord temporarily if you are severely dehydrated (e.g., due to severe vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or not drinking enough).
  • Do not take if you have a severe infection, acute heart failure, or severe circulation/breathing problems.

  • Avoid heavy alcohol use while taking this medicine as it can increase the risk of a serious side effect called lactic acidosis.
  • If you experience symptoms of lactic acidosis (e.g., severe tiredness, stomach pain, muscle cramps, vomiting, trouble breathing, low body temperature, slow heartbeat), stop taking Metformin Accord and seek immediate medical help.
