How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 10-30 mg per day. The typical daily dose is 60-120 mg.

Method

Take this medicine exactly as your doctor tells you. You must take it by mouth; never inject it, as this can be very harmful or even deadly.

Your doctor will tell you the maximum daily dose. Do not take more than this.

  • Loss of appetite
  • Breathing difficulties (including cough)
  • Dry mouth
  • Inflammation of the tongue
  • Feeling down or unhappy (dysphoria)
  • Agitation or restlessness
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Confusion
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Headache
  • Fainting
  • Low blood pressure
  • Itching
  • Hives
  • Swelling in the legs
  • Weakness
  • Significant body fluid accumulation (edema)
  • Biliary spasm (causes stomach pain)
  • Facial redness
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Difficulty getting or maintaining an erection
  • Menstrual disorders
  • Heart problems
  • Slow heart rate
  • Palpitations (feeling your heart beat)
  • Low potassium or magnesium in the blood
  • Decreased platelet count in the blood
  • Low blood sugar
  • Dependence on this medicine
  • Sleep apnea (pauses in breathing during sleep)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to methadone hydrochloride or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are using or have used certain medicines for depression or Parkinson's disease (MAO inhibitors) in the last two weeks.
  • Do not take if you have severe breathing problems.
  • This medicine should never be given to children. Keep it in a safe place away from children.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have asthma, lung problems, liver or kidney disease, heart problems, thyroid problems, an enlarged prostate, a head injury, or stomach problems.

  • Do not drink alcohol or grapefruit juice while taking this medicine, as it can cause serious side effects or change how the medicine works.
  • Do not drive or operate machines until you know how this medicine affects you and your doctor says it is safe.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, are planning a baby, or are breastfeeding.
  • This medicine contains an opioid and can cause addiction. Do not stop taking it suddenly without talking to your doctor, as you may have withdrawal symptoms.
  • If you take certain antidepressants and experience agitation, hallucinations, fast heartbeat, fever, muscle stiffness, or digestive issues, contact your doctor immediately.
