How to Use

Dosage

The doctor will tell you how much to take. Usually, you start with 10-30 mg daily, and it's slowly increased to a typical dose of 60-120 mg daily.

Method

Take this medicine by mouth exactly as your doctor tells you. Never inject this medicine.

Important

Do not take more than the dose your doctor has agreed with you. Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to methadone hydrochloride or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have used certain medicines for depression or Parkinson's disease (MAO inhibitors) in the last two weeks.
  • Do not take if you have severe breathing difficulties.
  • Do not give this medicine to children. Keep it out of their sight and reach as even small amounts can be dangerous.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can cause serious side effects.

  • Avoid grapefruit juice, as it can change how the medicine works.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have asthma, lung or breathing problems, liver or kidney disease, heart problems, thyroid problems, prostate issues, a head injury, or if you are taking other opioid painkillers or sedatives.
  • This medicine can cause sleep-related breathing problems like sleep apnea. If you or someone else notices breathing stops during sleep or severe daytime sleepiness, tell your doctor.
  • This medicine can affect your heart's electrical activity, especially at high doses. Tell your doctor if you have had heart problems.
  • Long-term use can change hormone levels. Contact your doctor if you notice a decreased sex drive, impotence, or missed periods.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take. Combining this medicine with certain drugs, especially those for epilepsy, nerve pain, or anxiety (like gabapentin and pregabalin), can be life-threatening and cause severe breathing problems.
  • This medicine can affect your ability to drive or use machines. Do not drive or operate machinery until your doctor says it is safe.
  • This medicine contains sugar (sucrose and glucose), which is important for people with diabetes to know.
  • This medicine contains a preservative (methyl parahydroxybenzoate) that can cause allergic reactions.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor. Do not take this medicine during labor. Monitor your baby for unusual sleepiness or breathing problems if breastfeeding.
  • Taking too much can cause severe breathing problems, extreme tiredness, low blood sugar, pinpoint pupils, muscle weakness, cold skin, slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, heart attack, or even death. Seek urgent medical help even if you feel well.
  • Never take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
