How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe your exact dose. The usual starting dose is 10-30 mg daily, with a typical maintenance dose of 60-120 mg daily.

Method

Take this medicine by mouth as a liquid. Never inject it.

Important

Do not take more than your doctor has prescribed. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling sick to your stomach or throwing up
  • Trouble having a bowel movement (constipation)
  • Feeling sleepy or very tired
  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
  • Sweating a lot
  • Dry mouth
  • Headache
  • Feeling weak
  • Blurred vision
  • Pupils (black part of eye) becoming very small
  • Skin rash or itching
  • Swelling in your body due to extra fluid
RARE
  • Heart problems, including slow or pounding heartbeat
  • Pauses in breathing while you sleep (sleep apnea)
  • Becoming addicted to the medicine
  • Very low blood sugar
  • Changes in your blood, such as low potassium, magnesium, or platelet levels

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to methadone or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not use if you have taken certain antidepressants (MAO inhibitors) in the last two weeks.
  • This medicine is not for children and should not be used if you have severe breathing problems. Keep it safely out of reach of children.
  • Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice while taking this medicine, as they can cause serious side effects.
  • This medicine can make you very drowsy. Do not drive or operate machines until you know how it affects you safely.
