How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 10-30 mg per day, which your doctor will slowly increase. The common dose is 60-120 mg per day, as directed by your doctor.

Method

Always take this medicine by mouth. Never inject it into your body, as this can cause serious harm or death.

Important

Your doctor will decide your exact maximum daily dose. It is very important not to take more than what your doctor has prescribed.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to methadone hydrochloride or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have taken certain depression medicines called MAO inhibitors in the last two weeks.
  • This medicine should not be given to children. Keep it in a safe place, out of their sight and reach, as even small doses can be dangerous for them.
  • Methadone can cause dependence and overdose, which can be life-threatening. Only take it exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Do not drink alcohol or grapefruit juice while taking this medicine, as they can cause severe side effects or change how the medicine works.

  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to have a baby. This medicine should not be taken during labor.
  • Do not drive or operate machines when you start treatment, as this medicine can affect your coordination and ability to concentrate. Your doctor will advise when it is safe.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, as methadone can affect your heart's electrical activity, especially at high doses.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you have lung, liver, kidney, or thyroid disease, prostate problems, a head injury, difficulty urinating, stomach pain, or if you are being treated for addiction.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially antidepressants, HIV medicines, certain antibiotics, epilepsy medicines, or medicines that make you sleepy, as they can interact dangerously with methadone.
