How to Use

Dosage

The starting dose is usually 10–30 mg per day. Your doctor will decide your exact dose, which is often 60–120 mg per day.

Method

Take this medicine only by mouth. Never inject it into a vein, as it can cause serious harm or be life-threatening.

Important

Never take more than your doctor has prescribed. Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose.

  • Palpitations (feeling your heart beat)
  • Low potassium or magnesium levels in the blood
  • Decreased platelet count in the blood

  • Sleep apnea (breathing pauses during sleep)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to methadone or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have taken certain antidepressant medicines (MAOIs) in the last two weeks.
  • Do not use if you have severe breathing problems. This medicine must not be given to children as there is a serious risk of poisoning.
  • Do not drink alcohol or grapefruit juice with this medicine, as it can cause serious side effects or change how the medicine works.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Do not take this medicine during labor.

  • This medicine can make you drowsy and affect your ability to drive or use machines. Be careful until you know how it affects you.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart, liver, kidney, lung, or thyroid problems, or if you have had a head injury or high pressure in your brain.
  • Tell your doctor if you have diabetes, prostate problems, difficulty urinating, or any type of severe pain in your stomach.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines that make you sleepy, or if you are taking other opioid pain medicines.
  • Long-term use can lead to dependence, misuse, and a risk of overdose. It can also affect your hormones, causing symptoms like weakness or changes in sex drive.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms like extreme weakness, nausea, vomiting, very low blood pressure, or breathing problems during sleep (sleep apnea).
