How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 10-30 mg per day. Your doctor will slowly increase this dose, and the typical daily dose is 60-120 mg.

Method

Take this medicine by mouth. Never inject it, as this can cause serious harm or even death.

Important

Always follow your doctor's instructions for your maximum daily dose. Do not take more than prescribed.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to methadone hydrochloride or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have used MAO inhibitors (medicines for depression or Parkinson's disease) in the last two weeks.
  • Do not take if you have severe breathing difficulties.
  • This medicine must not be given to children. Keep it out of their reach in a safe place.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have acute asthma attacks, lung disease, or other breathing problems.

  • Talk to your doctor if you have liver or kidney diseases (including kidney or gallstones).
  • Talk to your doctor if you have heart disease. Methadone can affect heart rhythm, especially at high doses.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have had a head injury or high pressure in your brain.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can cause serious side effects.
  • Do not drink grapefruit juice during treatment, as it can change how the medicine works.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. This medicine should not be taken during labor.
  • This medicine can make you drowsy and affect your coordination. Do not drive or use machines until you know how you react to the medicine and your dose is stable.
  • This medicine contains methadone, an opioid. Repeated use can lead to tolerance, dependence, abuse, and addiction, which can cause life-threatening overdose.
  • If you take too much, seek immediate medical attention, even if you feel well. Symptoms include severe drowsiness, coma, breathing difficulties, slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, and pinpoint pupils.
  • Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
  • This medicine can cause sleep-related breathing problems like sleep apnea (breathing stops during sleep) and low oxygen levels in the blood. If you notice these symptoms, contact your doctor.
  • Weakness, tiredness, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, or low blood pressure can be signs of adrenal gland problems. Contact your doctor.
  • Long-term use can affect sex hormone levels. Contact your doctor if you experience decreased sex drive, impotence, or missed periods.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially those affecting your mental state, heart, or other opioids, as they can interact dangerously.
