How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 10-30 mg daily, and the dose is slowly increased up to a usual daily dose of 60-120 mg. Your doctor will tell you your exact dose.

Method

Take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. It must be taken by mouth only; never inject it.

Important

Do not take more than your doctor prescribes.

  • Low potassium or magnesium in the blood

  • Becoming dependent on Metadon Nordic Drugs
  • Sleep apnea (breathing pauses during sleep)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to methadone or any of its ingredients, or if you have taken MAO inhibitors (for depression or Parkinson's) in the last two weeks, or if you have severe breathing problems.
  • This medicine is not for children. Keep it safely out of their reach as it can cause serious poisoning.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have asthma, lung disease, liver or kidney problems (including kidney or gallstones), heart problems, thyroid issues, skin diseases, an enlarged prostate, head injury, high pressure in the brain, difficulty urinating, stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation, or abnormal blood oxygen/carbon dioxide levels.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other opioid pain medicines or sedatives/sleeping pills, as combining them can be dangerous.
  • This medicine can cause addiction. Seek help if you feel you are losing control over how much or how often you take it, if you use it for other reasons, if you have tried to stop but failed, or if you feel unwell when stopping.

  • This medicine can cause breathing problems during sleep (sleep apnea). Contact your doctor if you or others notice breathing pauses, frequent waking due to shortness of breath, restless sleep, or severe daytime sleepiness.
  • Contact your doctor if you feel weak, tired, have low appetite, nausea, vomiting, or low blood pressure, as these could be signs of adrenal gland issues.
  • Long-term use can affect sex hormones. Contact your doctor if you experience decreased sex drive, impotence, or missed periods.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking gabapentin or pregabalin, as they can increase the risk of overdose and dangerous breathing problems.
  • Be careful if you take this medicine with antidepressants, as it can cause serious side effects like fast heart rate, high blood pressure, fever, confusion, and stomach problems. Contact your doctor if you experience these symptoms.
  • Do not drink alcohol or grapefruit juice while taking this medicine.
  • Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Do not take this medicine during childbirth. If breastfeeding, watch your baby for unusual sleepiness, breathing problems, or floppiness.
  • This medicine can affect your ability to drive or use machines, especially at the start of treatment. Do not drive or use machines until your dose is stable and you know how it affects you.
  • This medicine contains sugar. If you have diabetes or a sugar intolerance, discuss this with your doctor. It can also harm your teeth.
  • The preservative methylparahydroxybenzoate (E218) can cause allergic reactions.
  • If you take too much, seek immediate medical help even if you feel well, as you could have methadone poisoning. Symptoms can include breathing problems, extreme tiredness, fainting, coma, low blood sugar, small pupils, muscle weakness, cold clammy skin, slow heart rate, low blood pressure, heart attack, or shock, and in severe cases, death.
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Do not take a double dose.
  • Elderly, frail, and patients with liver or kidney diseases must be especially careful and discuss their condition with their doctor.
