How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 60–120 mg daily. Your doctor will decide your exact dose.

Method

Take this medicine by mouth; never inject it.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Weight gain
  • Fluid retention in the body (swelling)
  • Constipation
  • Feeling very happy
  • Seeing or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations)
  • Dizziness or vertigo
  • Blurred vision
  • Pinpoint pupils (small pupils)
  • Drowsiness
  • Skin rash
  • Sweating
  • Tiredness
RARE
  • Loss of appetite
  • Difficulty breathing (also with cough)
  • Dry mouth
  • Inflammation of the tongue
  • Feeling unwell (dysphoria)
  • Agitation
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Headache
  • Fainting
  • Low blood pressure
  • Itching
  • Hives
  • Swollen legs
  • Weakness
  • Excessive fluid retention in the body
  • Gallbladder spasm (abdominal pain)
  • Facial redness
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Difficulty getting or maintaining an erection
  • Menstrual disorders
  • Heart problems
  • Slow heart rate
  • Feeling your heart beat (palpitations)
  • Low potassium or magnesium levels in blood
  • Decreased platelet count
  • Low blood sugar
  • You can become dependent on this medicine
  • Sleep apnea (breathing stops during sleep)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to methadone hydrochloride or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use this medicine if you have taken antidepressants called MAO inhibitors within the last two weeks.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have breathing difficulties or acute asthma attacks.
  • This medicine MUST NOT be given to children and must be kept out of their reach.
  • Inform your doctor if you have liver, kidney, or heart problems.

  • Talk to your doctor if you are taking other opioid pain medicines, sedatives, or sleeping pills. Do not consume alcohol or grapefruit juice with this medicine.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy, ask your doctor for advice.
  • This medicine may impair your ability to drive or operate machinery. Do not drive or use machines until you know how the medicine affects you.
  • If you take too much medicine, contact a doctor or Poison Information Centre immediately, even if you feel well.
  • If you experience weakness, tiredness, nausea, or low blood pressure, tell your doctor as these may be signs of adrenal gland problems.
  • Methadone can cause sleep-related breathing disorders, such as sleep apnea. If you notice such symptoms, contact your doctor.
  • This medicine contains sugars. If you have diabetes or sugar intolerance, discuss this with your doctor.
