How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the right dose. For active disease, it's usually 1.5 to 4 grams per day. For preventing new symptoms, it's usually 1.5 to 3 grams per day. You can take it once a day or in divided doses.

Method

Take the tablets whole with liquid before meals. Do not split, chew, or crush them.

Important

The highest dose you can take in a day is 4 grams for acute treatment and 3 grams for preventing new symptoms, as directed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, gas, nausea, and vomiting.
  • Headache, dizziness.
  • Chest pain, shortness of breath, or swelling in limbs due to heart changes.
  • Increased skin sensitivity to sunlight and UV light (photosensitivity).
  • Kidney problems, sometimes with limb swelling or pain in the side.
  • Severe abdominal pain due to sudden pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).
  • Worsening of colitis symptoms.
  • Fever, sore throat, or nausea due to changes in blood counts.
  • Shortness of breath, cough, wheezing, and lung changes seen on X-ray due to allergic or inflammatory lung conditions.
  • Diarrhea and severe abdominal pain due to an allergic reaction to the medicine in the bowel.
  • Rash or skin inflammation.
  • Muscle and joint pain.
  • Jaundice or abdominal pain due to liver or bile duct problems.
  • Hair loss and baldness.
  • Erythema multiforme (a severe skin rash).
  • Numbness or tingling in fingers and toes (peripheral neuropathy).
  • Reversible decrease in sperm production.
  • Blood count disorders.
  • Kidney stones and related kidney pain.
  • Severe skin reactions such as DRESS, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to mesalazine, aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid), other salicylates, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have a condition that causes easy bleeding or if you have severe kidney or liver problems.
  • If you develop allergic symptoms like rash, itching, cramps, stomach pain, severe headache or fever, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
  • Stop treatment and seek medical help immediately if you experience severe skin reactions such as widespread rash, fever, or blistering (e.g., DRESS, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, TEN).
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe or persistent headache, vision problems, or ringing in your ears.

  • Drink enough water while taking this medicine to help prevent kidney stones.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney issues, a lung disease (like asthma), had an allergy to sulfasalazine, a stomach or bowel ulcer, or a heart muscle inflammation.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C
