How to Use

Dosage

For flare-ups: one suppository 2–3 times a day. For long-term treatment when symptoms are calm: one suppository 1–2 times a day. Your doctor will tell you the exact dose.

Method

Insert the suppository into your rectum through your anus. Do not swallow it. Go to the toilet before use. Lie on your left side when inserting and stay in that position for about 1 hour. Keep it in your rectum for 1-3 hours for best effect.

Important

Do not use more than 3 suppositories (1500 mg) in 24 hours.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Stomach pain, diarrhea, gas, feeling sick (nausea), vomiting, severe stomach pain (pancreatitis).
  • Headache, dizziness, severe or repeated headache with vision problems or ringing in the ears.
  • Skin rash, itching, increased sensitivity to sunlight, hair loss, severe skin reactions with redness, blisters, or peeling skin (like Stevens-Johnson syndrome).
  • Kidney problems (swelling in arms/legs, pain in sides, blood in urine), kidney stones.
  • Chest pain, shortness of breath, cough, wheezing, lung problems due to allergy/inflammation.
  • Fever, sore throat, feeling unwell due to changes in blood counts, muscle and joint pain, yellow skin/eyes (jaundice) or stomach pain due to liver/gallbladder problems, numbness or tingling in fingers/toes, temporary decrease in sperm production.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to mesalazine, salicylates (like aspirin), or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe kidney or liver problems, or a condition that makes you bleed easily.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had lung problems, especially asthma.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had an allergic reaction to sulfasalazine (a similar medicine).
  • Tell your doctor if you have stomach or bowel ulcers.

  • Stop using this medicine and call your doctor right away if you get a severe skin rash, fever, or trouble breathing. These could be signs of a serious allergic reaction.
  • If you get a fever, sore throat, or mouth irritation, stop using the suppositories and contact your doctor immediately. This could be a sign of a rare blood problem.
  • Drink plenty of water while using this medicine to help prevent kidney stones.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Consider renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Remember blood tests to monitor safety. (updated 20.5.2024)
