How to Use

Dosage

Adults usually take 500 mg to 2 g every 8 hours. Children (3 months to 12 years, under 50 kg) take 10-40 mg per kg every 8 hours. Children over 50 kg take adult doses.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection or infusion into a vein. Your doctor or nurse will usually give it to you.

Important

Adults should not exceed 6 grams per day. Children should not exceed 120 mg per kg of body weight per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Stomach pain
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Rash, itchy skin
  • Pain and inflammation
  • Increased number of platelets in blood (seen in blood tests)
  • Changes in blood tests that show how well your liver works
RARE
  • Changes in blood cells, such as decreased platelets (which can cause bruising), increased or decreased white blood cells, or increased bilirubin. Your doctor may do blood tests.
  • Changes in blood tests that show how well your kidneys work
  • Tingling sensation (pins and needles)
  • Infections in the mouth or vagina caused by fungus (thrush)
  • Bowel inflammation with diarrhea
  • Sore veins at the meropenem injection site
  • Other changes in your blood, with symptoms like frequent infections, high fever, and sore throat. Your doctor may do blood tests.
  • Shortness of breath, red or brown urine (signs of red blood cell damage)
  • Seizures (convulsions)
  • Acute disorientation and confusion (delirium)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to meropenem or other antibiotics like penicillins, cephalosporins, or carbapenems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had severe diarrhea after taking other antibiotics.
  • Stop using this medicine and call a doctor right away if you get a severe skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or trouble breathing.
  • This medicine can cause uncontrolled muscle movements or seizures. Do not drive or use machines if you experience these effects.

  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take, especially valproic acid for epilepsy, as meropenem can make it less effective.
  • Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to be, or breastfeeding.
  • Tell your doctor if you need to watch your sodium intake.
