How to Use

Dosage

Adults typically receive 500 mg to 2 g every 8 hours. Children receive 10-40 mg per kg of body weight every 8 hours; children over 50 kg receive the adult dose.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give Meropenem Thrive into a vein as an injection (about 5 minutes) or an infusion (15-30 minutes). It should not be mixed with other medicines.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 6 g (3 x 2 g) and for children 120 mg/kg (3 x 40 mg/kg).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Stomach pain
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Rash, itchy skin
  • Pain and inflammation at the injection site
  • Increased blood platelets in blood
  • Changes in blood tests, including liver function tests
RARE
  • Changes in blood: decreased platelets (may cause bruising), increased/decreased white blood cells, increased bilirubin.
  • Changes in blood tests, including kidney function tests.
  • Tingling (pins and needles).
  • Mouth or vaginal infections caused by yeast (thrush).
  • Bowel inflammation with diarrhea.
  • Sore veins where Meropenem is injected.
  • Other changes in blood: frequent infections, high fever, sore throat.
  • Seizures (convulsions).
  • Sudden confusion (delirium).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to meropenem or other similar antibiotics (like penicillins).
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had severe diarrhea after taking other antibiotics.
  • This medicine can cause a positive Coombs test, meaning your body has antibodies that can destroy red blood cells.
  • If you get severe skin reactions (fever, rash, blisters, or peeling skin), contact a doctor immediately.

  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially for gout (probenecid), epilepsy (valproic acid), or blood thinners.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding, as this medicine is not recommended during pregnancy and small amounts may pass into breast milk.
  • Do not drive or use machines if you experience headaches, tingling skin, or uncontrolled muscle movements (seizures) while taking this medicine.
  • This medicine contains sodium (salt); tell your doctor if you need to monitor your sodium intake.
