How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual dose is 500 mg to 2 g every 8 hours. For children, the dose depends on weight and age, usually 10-40 mg per kilogram of child's weight every 8 hours. Children over 50 kg receive the adult dose.

Method

The medicine is given as an injection or infusion into a large vein. A doctor or nurse usually gives it, and it takes 5 to 30 minutes. Injections should be given at the same time each day.

Important

For adults, the maximum dose is usually 6 g per day (2 g every 8 hours). For children, the maximum dose depends on weight, but children over 50 kg receive the adult dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Rash, itchy skin
  • Pain and inflammation at the injection site
  • An increase in cells that help blood clot (seen in blood tests)
  • Changes in blood tests that check liver function
RARE
  • Changes in blood counts, such as a decrease in platelets (which can lead to easier bruising) or changes in white blood cell counts.
  • Changes in blood tests that check kidney function.
  • Tingling or numbness in the skin (like pins and needles).
  • Yeast infections in the mouth or vagina (thrush).
  • Bowel inflammation with diarrhea.
  • Tenderness or pain in the vein at the injection site.
  • Low potassium levels in the blood (can cause weakness, muscle cramps, or irregular heartbeats).
  • Liver problems (skin or eyes turn yellow, itchy skin, dark urine, or pale stools).
  • Seizures.
  • Sudden confusion or disorientation.
  • Red blood cell damage (symptoms may include shortness of breath, red or brown urine).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to meropenem or other antibiotics (like penicillins).
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, or if you have had severe diarrhea after taking other antibiotics.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you experience severe skin reactions, unexplained muscle pain, weakness, or dark urine.
  • Inform your doctor if you notice yellowing of your skin or eyes, itchy skin, dark urine, or pale stools, as these could be signs of liver problems.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other medicines, such as epilepsy medications (valproic acid) or blood thinners.
