How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual dose is 500 mg to 2 g every 8 hours. For children over 3 months, the dose is 10-40 mg per kilogram (kg) of body weight every 8 hours; children over 50 kg receive adult doses.

Method

The medicine is given as an injection or infusion into a large vein, typically taking 5-30 minutes.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 6 grams.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Stomach ache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Rash, itchy skin
  • Pain and inflammation
  • Increased number of platelets in blood (seen in blood tests)
  • Changes in blood test results, including liver function tests
RARE
  • Changes in blood, such as fewer platelets, increased/decreased white blood cells, or increased bilirubin levels
  • Changes in blood test results, including kidney function tests
  • Tingling or prickling sensation (pins and needles)
  • Fungal infections in the mouth or vagina (candidiasis)
  • Bowel inflammation with diarrhea
  • Tenderness or soreness in the vein at the Meropenem SUN injection site
  • Other blood changes, with symptoms like frequent infections, high fever, and sore throat
  • Decreased blood potassium levels (which can cause weakness, muscle cramps, tingling, and irregular heartbeat)
  • Liver problems: yellowing of skin or eyes, itchy skin, dark urine, or pale stools
  • Seizures
  • Sudden confusion and disorientation (delirium)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to meropenem, other ingredients in this medicine, or other antibiotics such as penicillins, cephalosporins, or carbapenems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had severe diarrhea after taking other antibiotics.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you develop severe skin reactions, such as a serious rash, blistering, or peeling skin.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, or dark urine, as this could be a sign of muscle breakdown.

  • Tell your doctor if you notice yellowing of skin or eyes, itching, dark urine, or pale stools, as these can be signs of liver problems.
  • Do not use Meropenem SUN if you are taking valproic acid or similar epilepsy medicines, as it can make them less effective.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using this medicine, as it's generally avoided during pregnancy and small amounts may pass into breast milk.
  • This medicine can cause headaches, tingling, involuntary muscle movements, and seizures, which may affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. Do not drive or use machines if you experience these side effects.
