How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the typical dose is 500–2000 mg every eight hours. For children aged 3 months to 12 years, the usual dose is 10–40 mg per kg of body weight every eight hours; children over 50 kg receive the adult dose.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection or infusion into a large vein, usually by a doctor, nurse, or other healthcare professional.

Important

The maximum adult dose is up to 6000 mg per day, given as 2000 mg every 8 hours. Dosing intervals might be longer if you have kidney problems.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Abdominal pain
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Being sick (vomiting)
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Rash or itchy skin
  • Pain and inflammation at the injection site
  • Increase in blood platelets (seen in blood tests)
  • Changes in blood test results, including liver function tests
  • Changes in blood, such as fewer platelets (making you bruise more easily), changes in white blood cells, and increased bilirubin (seen in blood tests)
  • Changes in blood tests, including those showing how well your kidneys work
  • Tingling or prickling sensation in the skin
  • Yeast infections in the mouth or vagina (thrush)
  • Bowel inflammation with diarrhea
  • Tenderness or soreness of blood vessels at the Meropenem Steriscience injection site
  • Other blood changes, with symptoms such as frequent infections, high fever, and sore throat
RARE
  • Seizures (fits)
  • Sudden confusion or delirium

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Meropenem Steriscience if you are allergic to meropenem, other carbapenem antibiotics, penicillins, or cephalosporins.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, or if you have had severe diarrhea after taking other antibiotics.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you develop severe skin reactions like widespread rash, blisters, peeling skin, fever, or joint pain, or if you experience symptoms of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or difficulty breathing.
  • Do not take Meropenem Steriscience if you are taking valproic acid (for epilepsy), as this medicine can make valproic acid less effective.
  • If you experience muscle twitching, uncontrolled shaking (convulsions), or seizures that may cause loss of consciousness, do not drive or operate machinery.
