How to Use

Dosage

Typical dosage for adults is 500 mg to 2 g every 8 hours; for children over 3 months, 10-40 mg per kg every 8 hours, up to the adult dose for those over 50 kg.

Method

It is given as an injection (quick shot) or infusion (drip) into a large vein, typically over 5 to 30 minutes.

Important

For adults and adolescents, up to 6 g per day; for children, up to 120 mg per kg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Rash, itchy skin
  • Pain and inflammation at the injection site
  • Increased platelet count (seen in blood tests)
  • Changes in blood test results, such as liver function tests
RARE
  • Changes in blood tests (e.g., fewer platelets causing easy bruising, changes in white blood cells, or increased bilirubin)
  • Changes in blood tests showing kidney function problems
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Fungal infections in the mouth or vagina (thrush)
  • Bowel inflammation with severe diarrhea
  • Tenderness or soreness of the vein where the medicine was given
  • Low potassium in the blood (can cause weakness, muscle cramps, tingling, and irregular heartbeat)
  • Convulsions (seizures)
  • Sudden confusion or disorientation

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Meropenem Qilu if you are allergic to meropenem, other carbapenem antibiotics, penicillins, or cephalosporins.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, or severe diarrhea from other antibiotics.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you develop severe skin reactions like rash, itching, swelling of the face/lips, or difficulty breathing.
  • Contact your doctor if you notice yellow skin/eyes, itchy skin, dark urine, or pale stools, as these can be signs of liver problems.
  • Meropenem Qilu should generally be avoided during pregnancy; discuss with your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
