How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the typical dose is 500 mg to 2 g; for children over 3 months, it's 10-40 mg per kg of body weight.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection or infusion directly into a large vein, usually by a doctor or nurse.

Important

Doses are typically given every 8 hours, but the time between doses may be longer if your kidneys are not working well.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Rash, itchy skin
  • Pain and inflammation at the injection site
  • Increased number of platelets in blood (seen in blood tests)
  • Changes in blood test results, including liver function tests
RARE
  • Changes in blood counts, such as decreased platelets (leading to easier bruising), increased or decreased white blood cells, and increased bilirubin. Your doctor may order blood tests.
  • Changes in blood test results, including kidney function tests
  • Decreased potassium levels in the blood (can cause weakness, muscle cramps, tingling, and irregular heartbeats).
  • Liver problems: yellowing of skin/eyes, itchy skin, dark urine, pale stools. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice these.
  • Tingling or prickling sensation on the skin
  • Fungal infections in the mouth or vagina (candidiasis)
  • Gut inflammation with diarrhea
  • Tenderness/soreness of blood vessels at the Meropenem Navamedic injection site
  • Other blood changes. Symptoms may include repeated infections, high fever, and sore throat. Your doctor may order blood tests.
  • Seizures
  • Acute confusion (delirium)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to meropenem or other carbapenem, penicillin, or cephalosporin antibiotics.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems.
  • Inform your doctor if you have had severe diarrhea after taking other antibiotics.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you develop severe skin reactions like rash, blisters, or peeling skin.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, or dark urine, as these could indicate muscle damage.

  • Tell your doctor if you notice yellowing of skin or eyes, itching skin, dark urine, or pale stools, as these can be signs of liver problems.
  • Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, especially probenecid (for gout), valproic acid (for epilepsy), and blood thinners.
  • Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as this medication should generally be avoided during pregnancy and may pass into breast milk.
  • This medicine can cause headaches, tingling, or involuntary muscle movements (seizures) which can affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. Do not drive or use machines if you experience these effects.
